Thumbs up Straight 6 lives with Mazda. In diesel.

Who said the straight 6, was dead ? Not Mazda.
"Mazda
has introduced its long-promised turbodiesel straight-six engine. Called e-Skyactiv D, the 3.3-liter six-cylinder was developed for markets outside of America, and it's presented as one of the cleanest-burning diesel engines in the world thanks to clever technology.

The company explained that it designed the e-Skyactiv D engine "to meet the needs of customers who want an efficient, long-distance driving car with great towing capacity." At launch, the straight-six will be offered in two states of tune: 200 horsepower with rear-wheel-drive and 254 horsepower with all-wheel-drive. Its torque output checks in at up to 407 pound-feet, and it works with a 48-volt mild hybrid system.

Mazda notes that the new turbodiesel features a technology called Distribution-Controlled Partially Premixed Compression Ignition (DCPCI) that helps it achieve a thermal efficiency of over 40%, which is higher than average. In turn, this improves fuel economy and increases the driving range, which we're told is "outstanding." The rest of the figures quoted by the manufacturer are equally impressive: the 200-horse six-cylinder's average fuel economy is rated at 48 mpg using the European testing cycle, while the more powerful version returns 44 mpg. The latter gives the CX-60 a usable 5,500-pound towing capacity, yet it's about as light as the 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel offered in the CX-5.

Deliveries of the diesel-powered CX-60 are scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2023, though nothing suggests we'll see the engine in the United States. Mazda stopped selling diesels here in 2021, and the upmarket CX-60 will not be offered on our shores. However, Mazda said the rear-wheel-drive platform that underpins the crossover will later spawn a pair of crossovers called CX-70 and CX-90, respectively, that are being developed specifically for the North American market. The odds of seeing either with a turbodiesel straight-six are low, though." http://www.autoblog.com/2022/07/05/m...BROA4ZPmkDjUcI

Mazda have never made a straight 6 before have they?

40% thermal efficiency is impressive.

They've got a history of commercial diesel engines in trucks, so I'd say they have.

Or did they just use Perkins engines, I'm not sure but there's Mazda trucks all over the joint with diesel engines.

The article headline is a bit weird, cause there have been numerous companies that have switched from V6 to I6 over the past 5 years. Mercedes, Jaguar/LR, soon Jeep etc.

And Mazda have already introduced the petrol I6.

Equals EGR, with some fancy nomenclature!

I would have expected near 300hp and over or 220-250kW.

Like most diesels it will have a very low Torque curve + Turbocharging to help it get moving.

Reading this link, it looks like 2 versions will be available - 147kw for RWD and 187kw in AWD with 550nm so at least the AWD version should be good. RWD does seem underdone though..

All of this was designed for Europe right when Europe is walking away from diesels and ICE,
so just as there was an oh crap moment with the I-6 petrol engine, this is a vehicle going nowhere.

My guess is that the price will be prohibitive in our market and actual interest will be insufficient.

Sounds more like a pre-combustion chamber maybe, like what Maserati have developed for their new petrol turbo V6. It mixes fuel and air in a pre-chamber before it's shot into the actual combustion chamber.

Or maybe i'm way off.

It is a bit of a dead duck for sure. But then again, Mazda diesels have never really been that popular anyway have they? I remember them selling them in 2's and 3's, and the CX5? I think, but they all sold poorly and they ended up dropping them.

Only made sense for Europe, and as you say, they are turning their backs on them now. Maybe they were too far down the road to turn back?

We never got a Diesel 2 over here, but we did get a diesel 3 (which sold in tiny numbers). It was d/c with the advent of the last gen 3. Mazda 6 had a diesel available up until MY20 cars (I owned a 15 Diesel and it was brilliant) when it was d/c and they added the 2.5t petrol from the CX-9. CX-5 you can still get diesel's and they do still sell a few of them.

I was excited about the potential of a straight 6 RWD petrol Mazda 6 but looks like it isn't going to happen which is a shame.

Agree, you’re on the mark with that and no doubt Mazda spent big on it’s I-6 plans.
I don’t see much of a market for this when everyone is going either BEV or hybrid.
I think it’s only a matter of time before lack of real world sales consigns this to history,
because many who love and advocate for a super efficient I-6 simply won’t go and buy one.
