Thumbs up Added the resonator to 2.25" Cat Back

On Thursday I had a resonator put in just behind the "Cattle-specific Perverter".

Very happy with the more refined deep grumble - lovely jublee!!

Here are some interesting observations since the inclusion of a resonator:-
1) Off-the-line power has definitely returned;
2) 3,250rpm to redline happens smoothly, without hesitation, and much quicker;
3) Fuel consumption is down from 9.5 to 8.2L/100klm (exactly the same driving done).

Interesting. I was reading something the other day that perfomance can suffer if the exhaust can't completely fill with gas (ie too big or to fast flowing) didn't quite understand it tho.

And before anyone chimes in with 'back pressure' it's really only relavant to the size dump pipe on a turbo engine and the amount of gas between the turbo and the cat. Shouldn't matter too much on an N/A motor. Tuned header runner lengths is what you need to look at.

That's why it pays to get exhaust work done by someone that really knows what they're doing, no just a glorified plumber.

I really thought I was just imagining it TJ.
But I had my Mechanic take it for a spin, 'cause he had driven it a couple of days before I had the resonator put in.
He said the difference was significant as too.

It was just a bog standard straight through resonator and the exhaust guy says it could be that the resonator has just made the system very effecient for this particular engine. A complete fluke. :

Whatever . . . I'll take it!!

Depends what you want Mate.
Some of the guys here have full Stainless, Mandrel Bends, High Flow Cat, etc and that is the top end of things and no doubt it works really well too.

For me its mostly about function - I want a car that works the best it can but I am on a tight budget. . hey if it happens to look good to, thats a bonus but I am all about function.

So for me it was 2.25", non-mandrel bends in non-stainless with a single rear muffler and one straight through resonator. Functionally this probably works as a 2" system ('cause the bends restrict a little) which is what my research tells me I need for performance out of this engine.

I want performance not necessarily noise.

Given the availability of more $ I would have gone the mandrel bends but that would be the only different thing I would have done . . . for my needs.

Cost for my system - $260 total.

From my research 2.25" is definitely the way to go for the 2.0L duratec.

My exhaust is probably a little large at 2.5", but still decided to go with the complete package from X-Force. It is actually a Mazda 3 system, I think the exhaust is built for the SP23 with the 2.3L Duratec / Mazda MZR Engine.

Oh, and no doubt about it DZ, 2.25" is what most people say on the forums I have read. No argument here. I bought 2.25".
But I reckon with the non-mandrel bends it is probably working as a 2" system which is what 3 different car tuners, all involved in car racing, said to me I needed.
Maybe they meant 'at least' 2"??
Anyho, I'm real happy with my 2.25" . . . probably only notice the .25" difference on a dyno anyway, apart from the sound.

I have been doing a bit of a search to find some locals rather than national companies, hopefully can save some cash.

I had a 'redback' exhaust on my 01 lancer, and whilst it did increase performance, the sound was horrible, so Im very cautious of this time.

Thanks for the advise, and I'll look at 2.25" and see If they do mandrel bends!
