Ok Ford fans... Since i have been ratherly raped this last week, nothing but trojan this, worm that , been redirected across half the bloody internet, I would like to ask what is available out there, and your opinions.
Im not after what you are using as im led to believe this could make it easy for someone to hack your system if they know what you have...
So whats out there, And would you recommend.

AVG anti virus works well. They have a free version that you can update & also scans emails.

On a clean install of Windows XP Pro SP2, install a copy of Mcafee anti virus or Zone Alarm Pro. Dont browse porn sites, dont open emails or any file that you are suspicious of.

There is no better protection than a decent Router with Built in True Firewall and SPI

This is the setup I am running on an Athlon 64 system ( which has built in protection ) and I have not had one single trojan, pop up or redirection in over 7 months of internet browsing

I now use microsoft anti spyware and find it better than the others, keeps active control of changes and pics up heaps of things, including msn plus, that others dont

I'd reccomend AVG,been using it for 3yrs and no probs.

I was using AVG .... nice & easy ......

Led to believe that Avast is as good ...... nice & easy ... it updates the files when you connect to the net ......

With AVG you have to update manually but it can scan your computer as set by the user ......... Avast updates automatically but you have to scan manually ..........

Also Zone Alarm is great as a firewall......... Spybot search & destroy & Ad-aware are great for those wormy parasites ;)

we see this sort of thing every day at work - firstly make sure you have the latest service pack for your OS. next make sure that you have at least ONE antivirus (two is better) we have had machines come in with norton and it wont pick up certain trojans worms diallers etc but AVG will. Stress - more is better - same goes for antispyware programs - microsoft beta antispyware, and spysweeper is what I use as well as spybot if needs be. Spysweeper will pick up the most and is very thorough. - Do not use Adaware - in the last month or so the amount of system crashes etc had multiplied with this program installed it does some nasty things.

In general be cautious - we get people all the time complaining about the cost to remove spyware etc rather than formatting their puter and starting a fresh. - because they dont backup their data. some cases are so bad that there is no choice.

Just to let you know our current record for spyware cleaned from a computer is 14,948 traces ! - they were just as shocked as us and this was the reason their 1500K ADSL was running like dial up !!

Im using this as well as another ..... Ive had no problems with it ...... is it something new that makes it crash or just what the others are running with it ?????

AVG 7.0 and Ad-aware both free downloads. I must excorcise at least 10 boxes a week. And its very rare anything get past these two for long.
The new AVG 7.0 auto updates , older version required this to be done manually. Ad-aware can be run automatically but usually I set it up to manual scan it will prompt for updates if required.

The freeware AVG is excellant, if you want the business one send me a pm.

The High St Shiny boxed Norton and McAfee work well, but they have become bloatware, sapping much of the CPU capacity. Do not use these on older PCs. And if you do have them remeber to purchase the subscriptions for regular updates.

I regularly get for repair the machines that were purchased at or soon after GST introduction. As well as the kids games and dads porn, they have usually 5 years of their business accounting on them. These boxes still typically have the 6 months free trial copy of norton 2000 that came in the Harvey Norman package, owners though they were protected.

I browse so much and never have any issues, use nortons as anti virus and ZA and thats it, occasionally use adaware SE and spybot to check it out, never had any issues with virus' trojans you name it always on cable connection, and half the time i dont even run a firewall

and no it does not make it easier for someone to hack you if they know what you are using.... and why would anyone want to hack a normal user.. not like anyone has NASA secrets etc on their home PC's

I've tried many antivirus's over the last few years to try and find the one that suits me best. Apart from the AVG antivirus which most of the people on there have already suggested I've found that Panda Antivirus is handsdown the best antivirus I've come across. It's found things that AVG never picked up and also has a fully customisable firewall which come in real handy for those diallers that worm there way onto a pc. Gonna give F-Secure a go today which got pretty good reviews and will let you know.

Sygate Personal Firewall
Any Anti Virus App, they are all as crappy as one another and each have their failings.
Spybot with teatimer & SD Resident enabled
Firefox or run Internet Explorer with Popup Stopper
Patch regularly

These are a few of my favourite things.

Norton is shite, complete system hog...not recommended. I swear by Mcafee and Zone alarm. We use F-Secure at work, although it has little use as we run mostly off a Linux server

SAV and ad-aware takes care of any spyware....

firefox stops pop ups better than other pop up killers ive tried as well.

Said before... AVG for antivirus, Sygate for firewall, that new Microsoft spy checker is damn good but a system hijacker (don't even get me started on friggin' Nortons, that should be declared a virus in itself), Spysweeper for antispyware.

And I don't bother with the new service packs - installed SP2 and it screwed up the system, took it off now it runs fine. Also it stuffed up my brother in law's pc. Service Packs are a waste of time (ask any IT God).

Ahhh good ole FUD

Macintosh was a brand name from the early 90's and hasn't been used in a while. And sure back in the 90's they were more expensive then PC's. But compare like with like and you will find that they are competitively priced. Unfortunately, most people would compare to self built, or white box built PC's.

But also as being well priced, they are fair nicer to operate than WinXP, and perform just fine as well.

I use simple 'ole norton antivirus and personal firewall 2003. 2004 didn't work out for me cos it's harder to register if you havn't actually brought it!

Combined with firefox, i've had no problems. If i use MS Explorer i get some pop-up's and stuff, but nothing too serious.

The first port of call when trying to protect yourserlf is firefox IMO...it seems to have helped heaps.
on a side note the ad-blocker in norton firewall doesn't allow the sponsor banners on FF.au to dispaly - i didn't even know there was meant to be something there!

If you want to stop pop-ups set your internet security to medium,this along with AVG to scan for viruses...I've not had a problem since.

XPsp2, Ms antispyware and Ad-aware, AVG(or an antivirus product that doesnt clog). that combo works well and protects well against the crap thats out there...

at least it seems to for me, coz im always doin PJs for people at werk... and the pcs i clean up and put them on, stay clean and healthy.

but since there is no be all and end all 'perfect' setup, just see how ya go using what the majority suggest..
