Default 20w/50 oil in 6cyl 2007 fairlane?

Hey guys just a question, I’ve got a 6cyl fairlane 07 model running on gas, I usually use 10w/40 oils but noticed it’s burning a bit of oil between services so should I go up to a 20/50 weight or is that too heavy, recommendations?
Thanks in advance guys 🍺

Why is it burning oil? That's where I'd start.

Probably tired motor, it’s k’s are unknown but said to be around 200k also runs on gas and have been told gas motors use up the oil more so than petrol, it’s not a lot of oil it’s using really over the 5000k’s service intervals but just wondering if 20/50 would help

Don't worry about the first number in Australia (perhaps consider it where it snows)

Try a xx/50 see how you go

If it's burning oil due valve seats (smokes on start up) changing grade won't help

If it's leaking oil changing grade won't help

I found 20w/50 in our '97 EL and FIL's '96 EF would make them idle rough.
Switch back to 15w/40 and the smooth idle would return.
Don't know about a Barra though. Have never tried it in ours.

Thanks for that yeh living up nth, no smoke on start up and I’m pretty sure the oil burns from running gas instead of petrol so will see how it goes with the next 5000k using gulf western 20/50, it’s on special atm at Supacheap 👍

LPG won't be the reason it's using oil. I've run LPG falcons for 20 years and not had that issue. We have a 08 bf wagon on gas with 320k on it and it doesn't use oil. My AU Fairlane is approaching 400k and still doesn't burn oil.
Go the Penrite Gas 10.

200,000km is barely run in for these running LPG.
Hardly say it is tired at all.

Unless it has been around the clock and is at 1.2 million kms .... that's a different story then.

It’ll be fine

Don’t know if it will solve your problem but it won’t hurt the engine

Also by usage of oil I mean it was on the full line on the dip stick when last serviced and 5000k’s later it’s on the half line, normal for gas?? Was a replacement motor said to have done 190,000k’s which is around 200,000 now

Really depends on how you drive

If it’s country miles or hwy miles and long runs that’s probably about right

If it’s stop start short runs it’s a little high

Realistically it’s not the end of the world and I wouldn’t worry much

What’s the intake look like is it wet and oily? If so it’s a bit of a concern

That's an interesting piece of bullsh*t.

What makes you think that changing to a heavier grade of engine oil would reduce oil consumption?
Could it possibly be along the lines of................
It's a 'thicker' oil & therefore it won't fit through the clearances as easily.

200,000 kM on a Ford 6 cylinder engine is nothing.
It's not necessarilly the kilometres that wear out an engine, it's the amount of abuse & neglect.

I recon you have nothing to worry about

General rule of thumb is around a liter of oil to 2500km, plenty of people will disagree but your going to use oil and with your described driving and oil usage I’d say that’s about right

As for gas burning more

I’ve played with a lot of gas engines and I’ve never noticed any difference in oil usage

I suppose (maybe) as gas is dry when it blows past the rings it won’t be liquid and dilute with the oil but, I highly doubt It would make a noticeable difference

FWIW I had a crossflow 6 in an XF once that was that fumey through the PCV I would choke an air filter in a week, I ended up routing the PCV to an old oil bottle so I could use it to top up the engine and so it didn’t cost me a filter element a week

I would recommend removing your pcv valve and placing it in a bottle or similar. Then blocking the inlet into the intake. See if the oil consumption slows over a few tanks. I have had three that sucked oil back through the intake in this way.

Otherwise known as installing a catch can.

I ran 20W50 Synthetic in my SY Territory from new. Although I don't own it any more it has now done 340,000 Km. It only uses about 1 litre of oil every 15,000 Km and still runs like new.
