Notice it said the officer HEARD the car coming .. if he was driving one of those XR6 Turbos he might have been able to sneak by!!

The police suggested 320 metre stopping distance will have included the driver's reaction time, but I am absolutely not convinced of its accuracy or appropriatness here.

Some police would be suggesting a reaction time in the order 2 seconds. A person with a two second reaction time would have to be hideously drunk. The Bosch driver training manual (Germany) gives a 'standard driver' a reaction time of 0.7 of a second to 1. Higher,- and we begin to deal with intoxication range drivers.

The convicted driver erred on the face of it in pleading guily to 'speed dangerous'. He should have only admitted to exceeding the speed limit and copped it on that basis. Get proper legal representation.

What matters here, as part of an overall case, is 'sight distance' at point of operation as detected. A freeway for example can have a sight distance exceeding 700 metres and is built for speed when compared to a two lane rural or dual carriageway with 'intersections', as opposed to a freeways grade-seperated interchanges.

The vehicles conditions must be known by the defendant, tyre pressures etc and so on and all this must be made clear to the magistrate.

If you drive 'at speed', and are not prepared to back yourself up in court that it is not dangerous in itself, don't.

I have always been a bit suss about those figures. They seem an average figure for average braking and average grip from the road.

Although it is a set braking point (no reaction time) at the end of Calder’s bumpy front straight I am doing about 190ish kmh (5th gear). I can brake at the 100m board and make the next turn easily in the next corner I am in 2nd gear (roughly 60kmh). If I am desperate I can brake at around the 75-80m mark and still make the turn. Even guys that are claiming 200ish km/h at the end of the straight can brake at 110-120ish m and can still get around.

Think about it even given a 2 second reaction time (bloody slow) takes up 111m. I can get from 190 to 60 in 80m that has taken up about 201m to get from 200kmh to 60kmh. Would it take me a further 120m to get from 60kmh to 0kmh?

In my opinion that 320m time seems very rubbery. I think that you would need a poor reaction time, poor braking ability and poor grip between the tyres and the road to achieve that figure.

Being a performance car he might be able to get off.
Remember that guy that did it in his bmw or jag, he strained the point where the car was more than capable in doing that speed and was as steady as on the road.

Damn, at that speed if you hit something hard you would need a hell of safety triangles to warn of that accident. How many triangles do you need per 100 meters of wreckage anyhow?

Actually Casper, that type of accident/triangle comparison has a precedent.

In 450 B.C the Pharoah Khufu smashed his chariot into a donkey at a speed in excess of 250kph. The resulting impact threw wreckage and donkey parts hundreds of meters. The Egyptian empire decided instead of using many safety triangles to mark the hazards, they built a Glowing Safety Pyramid over the top.

I feel sorry for all you guys/gals living in police states. We lunched in Aileron again yesteday.... Really good pub there and $10 counter meals. Cruised there at 160 and back at 160. No looking over my shoulder in fear and worrying about a porker jumping out from behind a tree with a revenue raising device. Amazing how we can do this in the NT and zero holiday season deaths. He should pleaded the way John Singleton did when he was pulled over for doing 175k/ in a Bentley. That the car was built to do those sort of speeds and he got off scot free.I've driven a Bentley and own a XR8 ute and I know which car I,d rather do 200k's plus in. And it's not a Bentley.Just shows that there is definately two teirs of justice in this country and if your not well known or fairly rich be prepared to suffer the consiquences.

if he maintained 209, and they caught him in a few km's, how fast were they trekking?

It is well documented that a teapot full of Earl Grey will take longer to slow down than one full of English Breakfast.

Thats easy, 199,000 people to share 1.3Million km2 of land where 75% of the population lives in very remote areas and 25% live in remote areas.

Compare that to NSW were 6.8million people share 800,000km2 where 95% of the population live in Major Cities.

Cram lots of people into a small place and per capita the crash rate is superior (over a given time). It doesn't mean that all NT drivers are any better, there just isn't any inocent people to take out when you wrap your Ford around a Roo at 160kmh.
