Why can’t they just get an XR6T if that’s what they want? It’s not like they’re rare or anything.

Price point 20k can get a mk2 fg turbo with a few kays. Contrary to a lot of beliefs black leather seats are really easy to keep clean with young kids. They wipe down easy and dont show the mess like lighter colors or cloth. So maybe a mk2 g premuim or a mk1 premium may fit the bill for tech and price. The g6et is an option and atleast its different. A regular xr6 is the same car lacking a bit of go but still the same size. There are some options to offer up.

Lowest ownership cost for your family would be a Japanese or Korean 4-cylinder with long warranty, about 2 years old, from a dealer, for example:

* Nissan X-trail
* Kia Sportage
* Subaru Forester

One of my work colleagues just got a s/hand X-trail, and is very satisfied.

Another of my car-crazy work colleagues over the last 4 years have had 3 new premium cars costing between 40k and 120k each, but now drives a Kia Sportage diesel, and currently says he has less car worries (more satisfied) with his Kia Sportage than he was with any of the premium expensive ones.

Cheers,

The problem with being a ‘car guy’ and having family or friends with the same car is that you become the expert. And any minor issues mean you get a phone call to ask what’s up.

I just bought a low km 2010 50th anniversary G6ET for a touch less than 20k. There's not a lot out there though, carsales had pretty slim pickings. I had to buy one in perth and get it shipped over to vic.

Not a problem.

It's a Ford. "They all do that."

Yeah there are, but they are nice enough but not as fun. Like my fairmont ghia. Still falcon i guess... cant be a hot rod dad but it looks similar. You have to remember if your kid sneezes twice on the school run, parenting rules these days state you have to gas it to the nearest medical centre or hospital because it could be terminal bird cat monkey aids flu. So a family car has to be fast to get the over parenting parent to help fast.

Heaps of Alternatives if you have the "Budget" but for low budgets I wouldn't suggest anything but the XR6T.
