Default Self Serve Wreckers, Greater Sydney

- Taking in Dapto and Tuggerah plus stuff like PnP in Kings Park…

What’s the strengths and weaknesses of each at the moment - not historically? What about quirky rules enforced on site, or weird item prices?

Three wreckers I visit regularly.

Budgewoi wreckers - Doyalson
Huge yard. Reasonable prices.

ABCM - Kooragang
Deadset anything goes. Walking around cars stacked three high? No problem. No need to report to the office upon entry either.

Singleton Wreckers - Singleton
Really nice bloke to deal with. Great prices.

Hi Everyone,
when i was 21 and had a 1964 Chev belair i used to Visit a Wrecker out at Londonderry on the Northern Road.
When you got there you took your tools with you and got what you wanted yourself then showed him the parts and he would give you a price.

The first time i went there he told me " if you steal any car parts at all i going to punch you in the head".

Thank goodness I am a Honest guy!

My mistake PG2, I meant Budgewoi wreckers - not Tuggerah.

The one in Kooragang - there’s no cars on the satellite photo. Is the address wrong in Google or have they changed business model?

Anything two hours’ drive or less from the Parramatta River, I’ll consider Greater Sydney.

The recent reviews are a bit harsh! Implied, it has changed owners and not for the happiness of customers… Not sure I’d bother.

I recently read reviews on FordPro. One was “if you need a part, and FordPro are the only place in the world who has it, .. Buy a new car”. Hahaha

There is no business model.

They have recently bought a lot of stock. They mainly advertise through Facebook marketplace.

Bero has been shut for a while.

Cardiff has moved to Munibung Rd and is being operated by the same owner as before. You can't walk around their yard anymore but most of their wrecks sit in the customer car park or out on the road anyway.

Dapto is decent, has a huge selection of everything. Falcons, mostly B series, some E series and possibly a few FG from memory.

Prices aren't too bad, depends on what you're after. Staff are far from friendly though. Plus the @2 entry fee

Pnp, well, its hard to ever find what you are looking for, but on the odd occasion you can. They do fixed prices regardless of what vehicle, so its more or less buyer beware. But ive had a few wins in the past. $6 for a dome light diffuser for a b series. $50 per section (so $100) for a mint 2.5' mandrel bent cat back exhaust with hurricane mufflers. The main rules are no cutting tools and watch for snakes. And if you dont find what you want, the $2 entry fee is probably less then the fuel bill to drive out there....

PnP is now a re-badged Jolly’s, they are offering the Jolly’s rules which are basically the same as before plus no sex or drugs (whether this has increased or reduced patronage, I have no idea). The cutting rules are stating “no spark generating tools” so that might mean they now tolerate a recipro. Dapto and Budgewoi just say no grinders.

Would be interested to hear how those two track for pilfering and idiot damage.

One less self service wrecker.

From the Budgewoi Wreckers Facebook Page.

I go to Dapto every few weeks to see what new falcons come in, prices are good yes all fixed, the staff are friendly if you re friendly to them i have found (don't bargain with them), worst part is the customers. people destroy parts to get to their part easier.
i scout the place, find my part then go home and get my tools
last thing i bought was a low km FG ZF box for $330 but had to remove myself.
pre covid they had heaps of falcons then they cleaned house while shutdown and they are getting them back in but not the models i wanted

A few well stocked country ones here have closed down along with the once popular "Drive In" salvage yard.

I had a somewhat pointless discussion with Dapto yesterday.

Apparently they aren’t going to re-post their online price list. I tried to explain that it was a 200km round trip for me, and while I didn’t mind asking about the odd significant part of two in advance, it was a bit different to be standing in a yard, looking at a part or three and then having to back-and-forth with the office to find out if it’s my most economical choice.

I've used Dapto pick a part several times over the years. It's only 45 minutes from me, and not far off my daily commute to the uni. They have a good selection, but the staff are generally very blunt and a bit rude. Certainly don't have any people skills. I've never really liked dealing with them.

I was at dapto today, got myself some BA XR6 seats for my tezza. seats were $35 last year now $55ea. Still happy for XR seats for $110.
They are my goto for anything. Only thing I hate is the grubs who destroy parts to remove the part they want.... or steal all the wheel centre caps or leave doors open so interiors get wet

Another one bust the dust

Northern Auto Wreckers, Londonderry, NSW got sold; probably not trading anymore. Search returned as "temporarily closed" with reviewers suggesting it is closed.

Is that leaves Dapto as the only self service option closer to Sydney ??

George V

I believe the northern road wreckers was sold to another auto recycler (unconfirmed) but that’s the local talk
