Default Mk2 2 door escort project. SA

Hi guys new to the forum and would like to introduce my self/ask for help.

I have been religiously searching through here for the last week and have got a few different opinions on what to do but basically wondering if there's anyone in Adelaide who specialises/ has done - 2 litre turbo pinto. Basically I want to run fuel injection from the sierra 2litre, build the engine low comp with the arp cosworth rods and pistons. I have quite a few questions though and was wondering if there's someone here I could chat with to properly get my head around it and also somewhere to tune etc. plan is to be ready for my alma hill climb 2018. Thanks in advance! Steele.

get across to http://rsmotorsport.com.au for all your answers. or http://turbosport.co.uk
Mike dale in Adelaide has done plenty of pintos as has chris milton. Simax engineering have old ford experience but may be very exotic pinto!

What parts do you already have??
You do realize that the Pinto is a very heavy motor, not the best base for a turbo project...

Has many inherent problems especially valve train lubrication.

But, I guess it could be done. Do you want someone to do the work or are you going to do this yourself?

I've personally been involved with 'Janspeed' when I lived in the UK, and we did turbo some fords.

Recalibrating the fueling on the standard Ford mechanical injection systems was quite time consuming though.

Reverse engineering electronic factory ECU's is VERY time consuming !!

We didn't aim for high boost, but focused on reliability.

Not that much gain for a lot of work though !!

P.S I am in Adelaide.

Plenty of very powerful 8 valve pintos about that have held together well.
Cost of course may ot be your friend.
Seen a rising number of nissans sr20t conversions especially on classic ford as mentioned by xxxg.
Sierra injection is electronic and a good base for turbo.

Looked into the avenue of the sr20, also the ca18 as it's slightly smaller but seemed like a lot of effort to get it all to fit when people make reasonable power from the pintos. Going with the sierra injection system and for the ecu the megasquirt seems like the favourite option. All just research ATM to see what's going to be the quickest, not million dollarish option haha.

At this stage it's just the pinto sitting in the shed, but want to get the ball rolling. Plan to do a lot of it myself but there's a lot I'm not going to be able to do so someone that's good with small ford in Adelaide would be a great help.

Pinto seemed like the easiest option but like I said still researching at the moment.

What condition is the engine?
As a base for a turbo, you'll need to make sure it is all within tolerances and in great mechanical order.
I'd suggest a new high volume oil pump, possibly with an adjustable pressure relief valve.
Don't forget to install a new camshaft 'spray tube' (many years ago, I did a very special Pinto where I bored and cross drilled the cam for lubrication!)

you'll also need to measure and probably lower the compression ratio.

I also experimented and made alternative spark plug adaptors (needed to use harder plugs for the engine)

Have done lots of work on these motors....

Eskysteele, unless you have a large(ish) bank balance, the CA18DET or the SR20DET is the way to go. The CA being the easier option. If you must stick with a "Ford" branded motor, then there are conversion options such as the Zetec and Duratec kits available from the UK. Costs a bit but will be cheaper and better than the Pinto option in the end.

Cheapest bang for buck will be the CA18DET, and then the SR20DET. Been there done that. The Pinto has had it's day as a cheap HP option. Jap is the way to go for cheap HP these days. Heck even later model (1990's) Mazda's and Toyota's are doing SR conversions!

Agree with this part.

But, as always you can have cheap OR good... Pick ONE

+1 for the zetec/duratec. The initial cost of the conversion kit is offset by the cost of the engine itself. They're a dime a dozen nowadays and once you've got the conversion parts if you nuke the engine you can buy a whole focus/ mondeo wreck for 500 bucks and just keep going.
Plenty of aftermarket go fast bits too, you can even get BDA style rocker covers if you want the retro look.
Not saying don't turbo the pinto, I love them, but bang for your buck I'd go modern...

G'day , welcome to the AFF , great bunch of enthusiasts and if you can't get info here it isn't possible to get much better anywhere else. Sounds like a cool project.. Big fan of the Mk2 Escort , had three of them , also a 1.3 Mk 1 ex bakery van . I had a 79 two door , an 80 four door both with the 1600 and 4 speed manual . A few years later I bought a beaut 2 litre Ghia auto that was a really great little daily driver. If you get yours turbo'd ..little rocketship.
Looking forward to seeing progress ..Best wishes Cheers Rod.

Forgot to ask...

Presumably you'll be using this off road? as you will find yourself getting defected very quickly if you drive this car in a 'spirited manner'.

Unless you get the Whole vehicle made 'ADR Compliant / Engineered' by someone like me.

Including my work in the Southern UK, and here in Oz, been doing this and more specialized work for over 35 years.

I don't feel old until I look in the mirror !!
