Hey guys,
Just bought a 1998 ford falcon au.. The guy that sold it to us said that it needed a transmission service as was clunking a bit when changing gear ( auto). Took it to the mechanic and when they opened up the transmission they said there was coolant and crap. He said that we need to bypass the radiator and put in a transmission cooler. Just wondering what this should normally cost as he has quoted $550 plus $300 for servicing the transmission. Am I getting ripped off? |

Depends. Water in auto isnt good, although $550 s&f cooler seems a bit high. Not hard to fit, no more than an hour labour. Coolers arent $450. Unless he is replacing radiator...... buy an external cooler off ebay and get him to fit it. Tell him to totally bypass radiator cooler, then you dont need to replace radiator.
As for auto service, he obviously is going to try and get away with a flush to remove water. Fluid isnt cheap and you need a fair bit

How much should I be paying for all of this. He said he was completely bypassing the radiator. Needs to be fixed ASAP and I'm not mechanically minded. I was thinking of going elsewhere but if he services the transmission and doesn't put the bypass in and drive somewhere else will it stuff it up on the way?

Just moved to Darwin. I'm a chick and have no tools to do it myself. Bought the car for $1500.. Not looking forward to paying almost a grand more to fix the problem. I took it to an auto transmission mechanic, would that be why they are charging more? There are a couple of other mechanics that have been recommended. If they are cheaper would it be safe to drive elsewhere and get it done?

OK. I'm guesing that your 1998 AU has the auto trans fluid going through your radiator thats were the water can get into the system. A lot of people on the forum fixed this by getting the pipe cut so it doesn't go through it any more and then buying and installing an external trans cooler like a DAVIES CRAIG TRANSMISSION COOLER ($140 buckon ebay). Check th price you have with places like Ultra tune (they do Trans services) Cleaning would cost more.

A new radiator on Ebay is around $100 so for parts you would be out around $300

Thanks for the suggestions but I need this to be fixed now and can't wait for parts. Does anyone know what it should cost for a mechanic to install the transmission cooler.

You can buy a cooler for a bit over $100 at supercheap and fitting should only be about $100
the service sounds about right seeing coolant has leaked into the transmission as it will require a good flush to clear it out. bear in mind that the transmission may already be damaged by the contamination, which would then require a rebuild good luck

If I am reading this correctly you don't need a transmission cooler - yes they are good to have but seeing you don't want to spend too much money I don't think this is the best way to go.
You have got coolant in your transmission because your radiator is stuffed - get a new radiator and this will solve your problem. A new radiator fitted will be cheaper than a transmission cooler fitted and if you get a transmission cooler you will still need a radiator. BTW: Not too many transmission have a long term life after water gets in there. cheers Keith |

blumx is right u could be lucky by changing trans oil and radiator forget the oil cooler its not necessary on your budget
