I use Penrite 10/Tenths 10W40 with Motorcraft filters every 5000kms. I buy it in 20 litre drums as I don't like to change grades or brands for the sake of a few dollars here and there with something as expensive and important as my Windsor.

Its not too thick for the Turbo, and the N/A Barra will run some 10w-40 just fine. Look at the oil websites, on their lube finder. For example; Penrite recommend HPR5, Full Synth 10w-40 and Semi Synth 10w-40. Penrite has the "extra 10" rating though. Nulon Lube finder recommends full syn 5w-30, semi syn 5w-30 and premium mineral (yuck) 10w-30.

Interesting reading all the comments regarding dfferent oils and w ratings. It seems to me average Joe who gets his car serviced now and then with whatever the workshop has in stock, never has any problems and gets a good life from the engine. The pedantics who have to have 5-40 or whatever they think is best have problems, why???

Well how many times do see people complaining because their perfectly maintained engine blew up.yet others just keep on driving them without problems.Engines are now built pretty well and as long as there is oil and water in them they keep going regardless of how good or bad the oil is.

Pedantic? Run a 0-40 in a new Sprint 6 and Ford will warrant the engine. Put the same old oil in the 8 and you’ve just thrown your warranty out the window - Ford will not warrant the motor. That’s just one example. Ever heard the saying oils ain’t oils. Personally for me it’s a no brainer - read your log book. Has SFA to do with being pedantic.

You must know a lot of average joes.

Its good that you are super fussy about your engine oil BUT in the real scheme maybe 5% are very particular whereas 95% buy a car as a means of transport and get a service around about when it is due.Come trade in time the super maintained car is worth at best 10% more than the one that was bought and used.So I guess I do know a lot of average Joes!

No doubt at all you know a lot of average Joes. Do you think that when all the ‘average Joes’ go to their service centre that the mechanic just uses ‘whatever the workshop has in stock’? No they don’t, irrespective of how you think the world works - you’re wrong. Do you think Kia/Hyundai/Toyota etc would offer the warranties they do by using ‘whatever’. The average Joes car lasts a long time because workshops know what specific oils to use for specific motors. You might call that super fussy, I call it common sense. You’re talking shyte by saying they use whatever is lying around. I worked for a mining company in NW WA. We had 3 100 series that had over 600000km on the clock. They ran 24/7 and were serviced every 5000km for obvious reasons - you don’t get that sort of service life out of a vehicle without the mechanics knowing what fluids to use.
Do you think mechanics use ‘whatever’ in prime movers that cost as much as a house?

The average Joe just drops their A-B car off to the professionals, and it’s those professionals who know what to use, you’re seriously deluded if you think they just use ‘whatever’. Name me a mechanic or workshop who uses ‘whatever is lying around’.

Personally I use what is recommended in the manual - I call that smart not pedantic or super fussy. If you’re happy to take your A-B car to any workshop who is happy to use any old shyte lying around then good luck to ya, I call that just plain dumb.

You also confuse blokes talking about oil in this thread as being pedantic - it’s just chit chat about oil. Cars are our lifestyle, we’re just talking oil.

As for A-B cars, my F6 isn’t an A-B car. It’s done about 1000km in the last year. I take it for a drive when I want a pie with sauce from a little shop in Kangaroo Valley. I’m not selling it or trading it, but I’ll always use the best oil recommended by Ford. Personally I use edge 0-40......about $86 for 5 litres and I’m happy to waste the money, it’s not even the price of a pack of smokes and a case of beer for the weekend, and I don’t drink or smoke.

Yep, I bought 4 x 6 litre HPR 5W-40 Penrites last week. I love how often Penrite have sales but this 50% off was the best I have seen, hence my return the next day to buy two more. Parramatta SCA store Sydney. I was surprised how much Castrol and lesser quality oils were selling like hotcakes whilst the HPR stocks were almost full....oh well, more for me.
