Default 1976 MK2 escort 2L wont start....

Hi,i have a 1976 MK2 escort with a 2L in it.The car has been sitting around for 3 yrs.In that time the carby was removed and also the starter motor.I bought the esky about 1.5yrs ago so when i purchased it the carby wasnt on it and the starter wasnt either.

On the weekend i decided to see if i could get it started up.I put some oil into the cylinders,changed the saprk plugs,replaced points and re gapped.Changed oil and filter.Replaced the starter solenoid and refitted the starter.I also fitted another carby which came off an old XF is a weber carby.

I put some fuel in the tank.I cranked it over and a few times it wanted to start but nothing.I checked for spark have plenty of it and nice and strong.

I'm dumb founded,what could i check???? cheers

Try pouring a little bit of fuel down the carby throat. It may just be taking a while to suck up fuel.

If your sure you have plenty of spark, then i'd also reccomend pouring some fuel straight down the carb ( air cleaner off) and that should work. If not there may be something else stopping it.

Are you getting fuel squirting from the pump jet? Fuel pressure to the carby?

I've got plenty of fuel,fuel is pumping from the carby nozzle.I've also tryed pouring fuel down the carby,when i do this it wants to go but wont go on.

It's driving me up the wall.Is there something little i have missed?????

If theres fuel and good spark then it must be timing. HT leads from cap to plus correct order etc?

Firing order is correct,i havent checked if the dizzy was in the right spot but it hasnt been moved.Story of car is that i used to know one of the owners who owned the car it used to be registered and the previous owner to whom i bought it off had it and parked it and removed the carby and starter.So im not too sure.Maybe the carby i used is faulty????cheers

Take no. 1 plug out, put your finger over the hole and crank it by hand until piston is at TDC. Make sure you can feel compression against your finger so you know its the compression stroke. Once you can feel the piston at the very top take the cap of and check rotor is pointing to or just before the lead going to no. 1 plug.

Yeah i know how to do all that.Will get around to doing it sometime this week.Is there any timing marks on the front timing cover for the balancer????cheers

Yeh mate sound like timming then,, as the other guys have sugested,Line up the timming marks on the crank pulley NO1 TDC to the pointer the first mark on the pully is Zero 0.from memory,and No1 in the dissy,should get you close,But just make sure the cam belt hasnt jumped a tooth as well by lining the cam pulley pointer to the dot in the front of the head as well, with every thing else on no1 TDC.
