Default Nissan navara 2011 4.0 v6 petrol thoughts

Hello, looking at a nissan navara 4x4 ute dual cab v6 4.0 6 speed manual. I don't like diesels very much. I know they use a fair bit more fuel but I won't drive it that much. Has anyone owned one and what are your thoughts??? I know the engine is strong and has similar power to a falcon 4.0 being almost 200kw and 390nm.

It's a good engine, long lasting, and shouldn't give you any trouble. Just get your specific vehicle of interest checked out by a mechanic, as you would with any vehicle.

I bought a 2008 D40 4L V6 manual towards the end of last year as a second car for the same reason as you, I don't like diesels and the Navara had the best power and torque figures for a petrol twin cab.

I have since fitted a 2 inch lift, AT tyres and a Pacemaker extractors and 2.5 inch system.
It sounds good and goes well but not quite as fast as I was hoping (or what I'm used to).
It is dragging 2 tonnes and the thing that holds it back the most is the long gearing - somewhere around 170km'h at the top of 3rd gear.
In order to access the power and torque available you need to rev it to 4,000rpm and above (overtaking etc.) so I only manage around 425k's out of a tank of fuel - mind you I ring it's neck, I regularly rev it to over 6,000rpm.

If I had the chance to buy it again I would - overall I am happy with it.
Mine already had the dual mass flywheel replaced with a single, if this hasn't been done you can probably expect clutch issues - plenty to read about on the internet regarding that issue.

Yep, I'm happy with it.
I can't think of anything else for the money that would have suited me better.

There are good engines, bad engines, and plenty in between. Some well suited to the cars they're fitted to, others not so much.

The VQ is an awesome engine. And if you're looking for balls to the wall performance in a V6, its hard to go past.
For hauling around a 2t 4x4? Well maybe if you were racing it.
As you might expect, from a performance orientated quad-cam engine, its power is all at the top end.
If that's how you like to drive your 4x4, then this is the engine for you. I know a lot of guys fitted LPG, but If its not going to do too many miles you probably don't need to bother.

On the plus side you can probably find a good example, with modest kms, cheaper than a clapped out TD.

Reckon I must be the only dude on AFF who actually likes diesels. Last two cars were petrol 4x4 and I won't go back. Not going to try and convince you diesels are better and turn this into a diesel vs petrol thread. That's been done to death. I had the previous VG30 in a navara and VG33 in a pathfinder. Gutless and thirsty although insanely reliable. Spent a lot of time in a D40 petrol and I have nothing bad to say. Not exactly a performer but it gets the job done. It likes a drink but what petrol 4x4 doesn't. Resale is a bit more crap on the petrol I think.

Had one. Comfy ute, but LOVED a drink. Got rid of it after 6 months.

My sil had a 2014 model (diesel), I think top of the range.

I drove it a few times - seemed ok but had the worst turning circle of anything I've ever driven. Hopefully later ones are more forgiving.

Well ok, the Transtar was worse but only just...

This long term test may interest you. I haven't watched the video, but I always enjoy The Fast Lane Truck.

Had one of these as a hire car on holiday recently (Nissan Frontier) - Drove it from San Francisco to East LA (about 12 hour drive).
I was really impressed with it. Sat on 130kph most of the way no issues. Handled well for it size, was comfortable and had plenty of power on tap.
It did however drink the fuel like nothing else at that speed.
Apart from the fuel, I wouldn't hesitate.

You definitely aren't.
They have their place, and you usually can't beat them for economy.
For genuine off-roading, I personally think an old-skool diesel is much better than a performance orientated petrol like the VQ.
But the OP has clearly stated his preference.

Yep, agree. Last car was a little 2dr Jeep wrangler V6 petrol and normal was 16L/100Km. Replaced it with a PX2 ranger which is a much bigger car and am getting nearly half the consumption. Today 8.7L/100km. Anyways, before I hijack this thread too much I'll stop talking about how awesome I think diesels are in a 4x4.

I have always had and still have, v8 or turbo falcons. I'm used to getting smashed at the fuel bowser. Hell, when I was 17 and driving to school, my first car was a XC 5.8 auto. Driving to school in that was fun. Ex cop car white with 4 headlight front end. Everybody else had escorts, celicas, or Diahatsu Charades. My $5 fuel money did not get very far.
