So why would anyone buy a brand new car and instantly void the warranty? That's insane. You may as well save yourself $15K and buy a stock S15.

Saying it's up to the customer to modify the engine to increase power is a cop out, voids warranty and makes insurance difficult and expensive. And modifying the ecu in a highly strung atmo won't see a huge gain anyways....

Got it in one. The AE86 was a Corolla with a fancier body and sportier suspension, but it ended up being so well balanced that it became a favorite, and it did indeed create a whole after market industry and cult following that is still extremely strong today...check the prices of any you do manage to find for sale.

I've never seen a factory north south 4agze. Every one has been east west.

Also never seen one in a stock levin older than a ae101, or aw11 mr2.

Not saying they don't exist, I've just never seen one.

Can understand it at $70-100+k for the outlay, but the components of this vehicle aren't going to be the most expensive things in the world now are they?

Dont exactly see any other main stream manufacturer selling next years stock yet

I thought the ZE bit meant the motor was already supercharged?? Or was ZE the 20valve?? I forget after doing a ton of research several years ago to buy a clubman style car.

Love it or hate it, the one thing we can take away from this is a little lesson in marketing:
1: have a boss who knows that driving can be about "fun".
2: that "fun" doesn't neccisarily mean spending squillions on developing the most powerful engine you can possibly design.
3: appeal to a wide audience base...people who used to drive things like Celicas and the original hot Corollas including the AE86, as well as people who can see the fun factor. Not having a turbo is also clever...lower insurance, more accessible to more drivers in places like Australia with restrictions on younger drivers regarding turbos, etc.
4: Hammer the clever advertising.
5: reap in the sales.
6: make money hand over fist.

Thats right, about 110. 60 or so were dealer demos, Subaru kept some for itself, and there were around 20 or so pre orders with paid deposits from previous. The internet sale was only 110 cars, the Subaru boss confirmed this himself on Goauto. Go find it and look.

Ferrari's always have a waiting list of one or 2 years, so they are not alone. And just look at the waiting times on some VW's, which would already be stretching into next year.

Ad just remember Ford sold the 250 Focus RS's in no time, and they were double the price of the BRZZZZZ.

After you've lost your licence a few times it becomes less about how fast it goes and more about how much fun you have driving it. Or maybe I'm just getting old. I drive a Boxster S now and have been looking at a Lotus. So this definitely has my attention as a fun budget alternative. The price and the note from a boxer engine are the two things that got my attention.

But what I don't understand is why that isn't a reason why the 86 is not appealing.

Isn't that where the consensus is between those who love and hate it? -

that you need to wring it's neck to keep it reving and to drive it quickly around corners is what it is about. That's hard to do on the street unless you don't give a toss about doing the righty

If you don't want to speed wouldn't a tuff boat like my car be the go?

a shedload of nm's just off idle so you can give it a squirt at any time in any gear and then go back to being a good little citizen (don't need handling cause you're not going to go fast anyway)

Some would question the wisdom of buying a 70k factory rocket that you can pretty much never use legally to its potential.
Cornering fast isn't about breaking speed limits. When your our on the open road and you come to that set of twisties that is posted with advisory signs of 35kmh its an awesome feeling knowing your in a car that will easily handle those corners at a much much higher speed than a lot of others.
