Default G6E turbo or n/a?

Just taken on a new job that involves a 45min drive each way so decided to buy something to make it a little easier, looking at FG G6E.
The dilemma is turbo or n/a. Price difference isn't the issue, just working out my options.
N/A just as a comfortable daily, I'm in no hurry on my way to work so that'd make sense, my licence should stay clean and I'll keep the TE50 for weekend fun.
OR
Turbo, make a pledge to behave myself, do my weekend road trips in it and sell the Tickford to make room in the garage for another classic (always wanted a Capri V6 GT)
I've driven a turbo and it seemed to have good manners loafing along in traffic which is what it'll do most of the time, just wondering what the longevity will be opposed to the n/a. It'll be doing alot of km's.

I find my turbo better on fuel on long trips than n/a if you be a good boy, on highway between Toowoomba / brisbane with a little city driving often show around 8.5 to 8.8 l/100k... Never seems to look for lower gears with huge reserves of torque on hand

Ok thanks, fuel is something I hadn't thought of. I'm assuming the n/a will be alright on 95, will the turbo need to be run on 98? Fuel consumption and quality will also be a factor being a daily.

I'd go turbo. It should last quite long. It just needs to be looked after. The Ford six is a strong motor.

believe it or not, i run 95 all the time, the BP ultimate seems to give my car a rough idle on start up, all be it only 20 seconds or so, but since using 95 , no problem, also appears to have better economy, haven't noticed an appreciable power difference either

Turbo all day every day, so much fun to be had with that engine! Honestly don't even know why anyone would consider a non turbo G6E! Just exercise some restraint on the right foot when appropriate you can have a blast

Turbo.

Has the power...but you can still drive it in a sedate manner.

Fuel is 95 min. And I find it really doesn't use that much more then the na engine. If your avg speed is up it quite frugal. Stop start will kill the economy....but that's no different to any falcon.

Sounds like we have a similar drive.. takes me between 45-60mins to get into work during peak hour.

If you decide n.a you'll find yourself driving around in sports mode all the time as in normal mode the FG (mine was a FGII G6 Limited) can be a little too relaxed and doughy. A completely different experience when i do the same drive in my FGX XR8. So much so I'm currently looking for a daily XR6T or G6ET myself..

Based on experience I'd say go the turbo.

After going for that ride in my mates FGX XR6T i'd definately say go for a G6E Turbo.

Sooooo much power on tap and they do it easy as and G6's have the comfort's and interior equivalent to a Fairmont.

Best of both worlds really!!!

And as previously mentioned.....they're NEVER going to make these cars again!

If you only read the thread title - G6E Turbo or G6E NA - it seems pretty easy to answer and you wonder why even ask.

If you read the original post it becomes a much harder question - G6E turbo and sell TE50, or G6E NA and keep TE50 - it is a much harder decision and you can understand the uncertainty.

Gonna sound like a knob but only OP can make the right decision for himself after driving all 3 back-to-back. Yes, all 3, even though he is already very familiar with TE50. Drive both versions of G6E to gauge the 'difference' in enjoyment, and then drive the TE50 to determine if that 'difference' is greater than the enjoyment of your TE50.

If it were me, I would ask my wife as I have not yet found where she hid my balls after we got married...but when I find them and reattach them...

Funny you mention that theres a couple out there, if I can find one at a dealer I'll take it for a drive, don't want to dick any privateers around just for a drive.

Had a look at a couple of turbo's this morn, one private and a bit shabby and one on a forecourt, obvious rear end respray, tell tale crooked tale pipe and bent rego plate, Staying away.
So it looks like the hunts on for a turbo, theres a few at the dealers so I'll head out tomorrow. Thats not to say that if an exceptional n/a comes up or if I'm really impressed with an eco boost I'll pass them up.
I might even exercise option 3 and just keep the T series for now aswell.

Keep the T, grab a turbo, put it this way, you can't get them anymore and as time goes on finding a good one at a reasonable price will be impossible,

I'm in a similar situation to you.
My office is 50Kms away, and in the peak times takes a good hour or more depending on traffic.

What I find is that having to drive that distance each work day, is a lot more enjoyable in the turbo.

I actually look forward to the drive (not the traffic though ), and it makes the drudgery of the drive so much more enjoyable in a car that thrills you.

Its the little things like only having to depress the go pedal slightly to effortlessly climb a steep hill, or the power to manoeuvre in and out of lanes through the traffic with ease.

When you drive a car with heaps of power on tap and in reserve, it feels like you are not "driving" the car like Fred Flintstone with your feet pedalling away to get anywhere.



You also arrive at your destination a lot more refreshed in my opinion.
I think larger cars like Falcons with longer wheelbases also have this effect compared to smaller cars in smoothing out the rough conditions of our roads.

While in the past, Falcons have always been the Australian car of choice for soaking up the highways... The turbos just do it so much better!

You are lucky because it's so much easier finding an unmolested turbo in a G6E variant than an XR6.

Most G6ET's are owned by older gentlemen, executives and are company cars, and will usually be unmodded and serviced on time.

Go for it... I say!

If you get the N/A, you'll always be left wondering "What if I had have gotten the turbo?". Going from N/A to turbo is night and day. I don't think I could go back.
