Default anyone replaced EB steering rack?

I went to pedders today to suss out a noise i suspected as control arm bushes, i was right, i need to do upper control arm bushes... but they also told me my power steering rack is cactus... i was under the car with em, and could hear the slack in it.

Pretty expensive bit of kit the ole power steering rack... apparently different for I6 and V8...

Anyone got any recommendations on a cheap source for a new rack?

Pedders $440 plus fit
Fulcrum's quoted $500 plus fit.

I replaced mine when I accidently snapped it off the K-Frame cost me $50 for a second handy and $40 for a wheel alignment. Was perfect for a year and a half up untill I sold and parted the car out.

In my EA, I had the steering rack replaced not long ago as it was leaking power steering fluid out the right hand side. I had my suspension bushes replaced at the same time, so all up that came to about $800

Exchange at someone like Car Bits is about $300, maybe a tad less.

Easy enough to fit, replace tie rod ends at the same time (About $20-30 each). Will need wheel alignment though. Total cost would be around $400 including alignment. Could even replace the rubbers for the rack too, at less than them supplying and fitting just a rack.

prices are guesses as I get trade, so i added a bit to cover it.

If they do it.
- Rack

You do it
- Rack
- Tie Rod ends
- Rack rubbers

Hi mate,

I looked into this abit as I'll probably need one soon enough knowing my luck.

A Mob on eBay has them, selling fully recoed. They're $325 delivered outright or $220 change over (melbourne only). 2 year/50,000km warranty. I have no affiliation with this mob.

EB ED V8 Steering Rack. Fully Reco'd

Hope it helps.

ford quoted $800 normal retail for me today.. none of the guys i know where in at the time.. but i doubt i could get it much cheaper.....

What is actually different with the v8 ones????

Sorry Silencer, didnt read your post till after i rang them... they did ask me if it was a gt... has the gt got a better ratio for a better turning circle or something? i shoulda asked the question while i was there. Ford said they are non genuine parts anyways.

Thanks for the link lumpen... i will probably end up getting it from them. I will book the car in for the upper bushes next week, and see if the noises are gone... i'm not entirely conviced my rack is where the noise is coming from... i know pedders like to get you to replace as much stuff as possible.....
