Smile 240kw sprint i test drove today

I had to go out of town for a job today.... i was quite surprised as i came around a long sweeping bend to see a red ed xr sitting out front of a house with a for sale sign in the window.... I noticed a set of eb gt wheels on it and thought, that looks tidy, i'll stop in and have a squiz on the way back....

A couple of hours later i pulled in to have a quick gawk... upon getting out of the car, i noticed the black stripe running through the bumper and instantly recognise what it is.... I peered in the window, it's manual, SWEET!!! my head starts these crazy thoughts about why did i have to pull over and see this, now i want it.

I step back and look at the car as a whole, bit of paint wear on the drivers side sill panel, and a bit of paint flaking off the bumpers, interior is pretty tidy, except for the usual leather cracking on the drivers seat... (i have a spare set of normal ed xr front seats i could put in to preserve the sprint seats too)

The owner comes wandering over and we start chatting, he's surprised how much i know about sprints....

He proceeds to tell me what mods it has and how much it owes him etc, including all the parts in it.

It has EB GT wheels, EL GT spindles up front, big slotted brakes, fully adjustable koni's all round, heads worked, twin 2 1/4 system, big hpc coated extractors, thermo conversion, etc etc etc. I can't remember everything he's done on it. The list was pretty long.....

He says, you got time to go for a run? I haven't taken it for a spin for a while. I thought, why not, wonder how well it goes. He drives it sedately for a bit while she warms up, then pulls up and shows me what she can do on a very secluded road out in the cane feilds. It pulls, and pulls, and pulls. Jeezus. Not like a big block, but still has some balls about it. Down the road he says, you wanna drive, then gets out and walks around the passenger side. I felt obliged to accept, proceeded to be even more impressed with the driveablility of this animal. This is not the first sprint i've driven either.

We get back and talk fords for a bit, namely the sexy sprint sitting in front of us.

I didn't make him any promises about buying it, i'd have to sell my ef xr8 first.

He's been trying to sell it for quite some time, i know, i've seen it in the local paper a few times for $24000 etc. Never bothered, was overpriced for what it is i always thought. He's chasing $17000 for it, but i really beleive he'll take $15000 for it.

He still has the original wheels for it, but they won't fit on it because of the brakes.

HMMMM, shit, i want it. Needs a few bits and peices tidied up, but otherwise a genuine looking honest car, that has some BIG balls. What should i do.?

This thing puts a big smile on my face.... it's an older shape, but i still love the ED shape...

I'm concerned about insurance on it... He said book value on a sprint is only 10k now... so insurance probaly wouldn't replace it if it got stolen, unless i got an agreed value.... (it probably has waaay too many mods to get insurance on anyway)

i could go refinance the house and have it sitting in the second bay in the garage in a few days if i really wanted.

I've just blown a shitload of money on house renovations, so it's not really a great time...

DOH!!!

I think it's a good price for what it is, compared to any other sprint around.

it's got 140k on the clock..... mine has just clocked over 166k.

It hasn't got the body kit on it, pity. Has factory cruise control fitted, but can't remember about power windows or not.

Will not disclose where it is until i'm sure i wont be buying it.

There is also a cobalt blue sprint getting around here, paint is all faded, and very thin on roof, bonnet, boot, etc, otherwise straight and immaculate, i'm sure the guy would sell it for cheap aswell... Is just a normal falcon to him.

Who know's, i might end up having 3 xr8's in the garage soon.

I think you'd regret not buying it.
Way better than an EF xr8. (my opinion) (rare collectors item/GT'ness)
With all the mods, low K's, you having spare ED xr seats, the car just being there, the owner being home, the owner coming out, the owner wanting to go for a spin, the owner LETTING YOU DRIVE IT, you being able to financially make it happen, the price..
Sounds like an awesome car & an EF xr8 wouldnt be hard to sell either, especially being a manual so not a lot of difference in the price unless you want both.

Wow, so that's what those puppies cost? Spose after selling the EF you wouldnt have to chip in much... do modifying the sprints adversely affect the value?

Sounds like a decent sorta bloke to let you have a spin.

if i do get it, i want the sprint wheels aswell..... even though they wont fit on it....

What are people's opinions about it being modded so much? isn't that the point of having a sprint, that it's quick???

i forgot to mention that the roller rockers have been replaced with shaft mount versions, i'm sure there's more power to squeez out of it by changing cam, and using my gt40 upper etc.

I have put my car in the paper tommorrow, will see if i can move it.... and get this sprint sitting in my driveway.

Good luck mate, it sounds like an awesome car! I think its good that its been modded. The brakes are a good sensible upgrade so I'd say that he looked after it well.

Plus the guy obviously cherishes this baby like anything... What does he drive now and why is he selling it? It sounds horny as anything!!

I would love a Sprint, but I am not sure whether I would want to buy one modded or to even mod an original one... You're in some dilemma!

PS: They're not TS50 rims, are they?

Xrated - he bought a BA XR8 when they first came out, and he has a falcon work ute. He has been trying to sell the sprint since he bought the BA (he was waay too overpriced for a long time though. I'd never seen the car, had just heard about it from a friend and read it advertised in the paper) The wheels are EB GT wheels, I mentioned that in my first post.

I have been reasoning with myself that if i were to mod my car to the extent of this sprint it would owe me a LOT more money than what i can buy it for.

The guy bought all the parts genuine years ago when they were really dear.
Here's what i guess he's probably paid or thereabouts for the stuff:
EB GT wheels\tyres - $3000?
EL GT Front spindles - $1500
EL GT front brakes - $1000
EL GT clutch - $600
YT Shaft mount rollers - $800
HPC coated big bore genies, cats and twin system - $2000
Head porting, etc etc etc - $2000
Koni adjustables - $1000
Every suspension bush replaced etc - $500
misc other shit i noticed on it $2000

I may be way wrong on some of those prices, but i think i should be pretty close on most of them, maybe even underestimated on some.

He said he's spent about $17000 on parts alone, and i probably dont doubt it as everything was bought for it when the genuine prices was rediculously expensive (not that it's sensible now by any means) Some of that money he spent was on parts later replaced with alternative better products, said there's still about $15000 tied up in parts on it.

When i see the list written up there in front of me, i get more excited about this car.

He's thinking about stripping all the good gear off it if he can't sell it as is, but reckons it's hard on him emotionally to sell it either way.

So here's hoping i get a genuine buyer tommorrow out of the paper for mine.... So i can benefit from his loss.
