My grandma sold her 120Y to one of my cousins. I remember that day when she picked it up. This was in the 90's some time. I have photos somewhere.

I'm not 100% but I think it was also 120Y I used to cruise around Belconnen with my other cousins (her brothers) when they were on their P's. Good memories

Yeap 60's and 70's Japanese cars had great style and layouts, even if they seemed to be going for a US style.

Then and the late 2000's was their moment, they are the cars people should be snapping up now IMO. Especially as the Gran Turismo generation start getting to middle age.

There was no 120y wagon

There certainly was; Google it or see http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au...fo_datsun_120Y. There was the fuglky coupe, a 4 door sedan, a wagon and even a panel van (called a "Runner").


I hated them as they were always holding up traffic and causing accidents. They the needed to be drive briskly through the gears to stay at 60km/hr but because they were cheap and economical they were loved by the bowling club ladies, pensioners, driving schools and recent Asian immigrants who all seemed drove them slowly and often sat in the right hand lane. You learnt avoid following one at all cost. They also had abysmal brakes which further encouraged slow driving. Unfortunately they were difficult to kill so they hung around forever.

And there were certainly prettier, equally reliable and nearly as cheap but better performing coupes around at the time such as the LB Lancer and Toyota T18. Even the Toyota Corolla Hatch.

You forgot the Subaru; those not 4WD were front wheel drive. Also the Mitsubishi Colt 1978 on was a FWD. Probably others too.

A mate of mine was a service advisor at Arnold Glass Datsun on Parramatta Road back in the day and this woman complained that her 120Y was a gas guzzler, had no performance and bad brakes. So he test drove it and could find nothing wrong. But she was not happy so he asked her to take him for a drive. The first thing she did when she got in the car was pull out the choke and hang her purse on it. Then she drove it by putting the accelerator flat to the floor and controlled the speed by modulating the brake pedal. True story!

comes under the category of many of fairer sex that would arrange a 'service', only when the red warning lights come on. oil and/or water and not before.

the biggest joke in history is when a car is advertised.....'lady owner'. i would rather get an ex drift car, than buy a car from a woman.

The old Datto's were great cars, my Wife's first car was a 1200 and we went everywhere in it as it was dirt cheap to run.
I had a 200B which used more oil than petrol, lol.

The 180B was a ripper but as most know the 1600 was king.

Not a Datto, but I used to get around in a series 1 KE70 Corolla which was bullet proof and fun to drive too.

I believe ,and older members may be able to correct me on this , that the a series motor fitted to the 120y's and datto 1200's were based on the a series bmc motors hence their easy fittment to morris minors. As for the difference between 120y's and 200b's they ran different engines a series for the 120 and L series for the 1600,180b,200b and series 1&2 bluebird amongst other changes.

G'day...You might have timed the 0-100 with an hour glass but they did have a certain charm..I remember my first boss (a chef) bought a brand new one in a horrible greeny mustard colour...just about the worst colour car I ever saw but he drove the wheels off it for about 6 years while he had the job and it just seemed to go and go, not very fast but that's a minor point..

Correctomundo. the very early Datsun motors were a copy of the Austin A 40 power plant. The British motors were notoriously weak in the bottom end and ran bearings as a matter of course. The Japs built a strong bottom end into them and presto - a reliable motor.
