Default Changing air filter

Hi Guys,
I just changed my air filter and what seemed to be an easy job turned out to be anything but. My manual said to disconect maf, then remove clips, lift top of air cleaner and withdraw air cleaner, my problem was lifting the top of the lid high enough to get the filter out, there has to be an easier way, what do you guys do? I wanted to clean inside the box.
