Aussie Top Gear presenters announcedSafety groups are calling for the sacking of Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson after the revhead confessed to driving at 300km/h.

Clarkson, 48, was asked at the Hay Festival in Wales earlier this week about the fastest speed he had ever driven.

"On the public roads ... 186(mp/h)," the Daily Mail reported Clarkson as replying.

British road safety group Brake has called on the BBC to axe Clarkson, whose claim means that he was travelling about 190km/h over the speed limit.

"Jeremy Clarkson is extremely offensive and irresponsible," Brake chief executive Mary Williams said.

"His comments are very upsetting to loved ones who have suffered a bereavement through a road crash because of a speeding driver."

Clarkson claims he recorded his top speed on the road linking central London and Docklands in the world's fastest legal car, the Bugatti Veyron, which is capable of a reaching 407km/h.

The presenter has come under fire in the past for glamorising speed and contributing to bad driver attitudes.

Clarkson was involved in another scandal earlier this year after he was allegedly photographed talking on his mobile phone while driving his Mercedes.

What's wrong with cruising at 300 in a Veyron? Its like doing 100 in a normal car... :

If the BBC sacks Clarkson, bye bye Top Gear. But they won't so not to worry.

Goodness.

"Her comments are very upsetting to enthusiasts in well maintained cars such as Veyrons who have suffered through use of Speed Cameras, Highway Patrols and Radar Traps at the hands of clowns in cheap unroadworthy cars that crash because of a speeding driver."

The BBC wouldn't have the balls to drop JC.

It does suprize me that he was doing that speed on a public road, perhaps theres more to this story (as suggested above it may have been a public road, they had permission etc). He's still a legend in my books, no one says it like it is better.

People actually forget to mention quite a bit, Clarkson is the only one of the TG presenters with a totally clean driver's licence, no demerits on it...

"Jeremy Clarkson is extremely offensive and irresponsible," Brake chief executive Mary Williams said.

If this imbicile had have taken 2 minutes out of her uber busy life saving the world. She would have found that Jeremy Clarkson has made a living out of being offensive and "going against the grain".

I suppose it hasn't occured to these ouraged people that Clarkson might well be referring to the Autobahn when he says 'public road'. I recall a Top Gear episode where Clarkson raced the other 2 to Norway, him in a Veyron, May and Hamster caught the ferry, then a speedboat. I also recall Clarkson hammering it on the Autobahn to make up some time. It's quite possible that is the drive he is referring to.

Edit: Just read it again and noticed it says in England, but giving a direct answer to a question does not gel with my definition of boasting

If a forum member here posted a thread up about them getting done at 300km/h, they would be absolutely flamed to death. Seen it happen for people doing 30km/h over. Having said that, Clarkson for PM .

He was driving the Veyron at 300km/h on a public road. Now the fact he was driving a Veyron most certainly means that he was driving it during the filming of a Top Gear episode. I'm sure during the filming of the episode, the producers would have to take in to account all necessary safety precautions to protect the public, and also for insurance purposes.
My guess is that, yes it was a public road, but it was probably closed off for filming purposes.

He will be all right ... they wont sack him.
Question
IF they were to film it they would need a good plane to keep up and fly low to be able to record it.
if that was the case will they be in trouble for going to low ?

Cruising at 100mph on the motorways is fairly normal 'back home'.... but 180mph is a little bit quick I admit !

Used to Be able to go as fast as you liked at home in the N.T up to last year. As long as your vehicle was safe for the speed you were driving you could not get booked. Now look at the road toll in N.T more dead since 130kmh introduced.
When i was a teenager (get license at 16) I used to love Flying past Cop cars at serious speeds (especially on bikes) and giving them a wave. Average cruising speed between Darwin and Katherine (330kms distance) 150 kmh in car 170-180 on Bike had to slow down to go through Adelaide River copper always parked in 80 k zone massive Revenue raiser for N.T police.
And heres some advice never buy an ex hire car from the N.T lets just say they are well used.

Was the bumper held on by more than cable ties??? (joke on recent thread)

I like Clarkson for his irreverence, and just for plain entertainment value. He is not my driving teacher, nor do I want to emulate his moves on the road. I can't condone that speed on a public road, but without knowing the circumstances of his 'boast', ie if 'having a laugh' or not, or whether just on a closed road, controlled etc, by someone experienced, in one of the world's (if not THE) best car do do that kind of thing, then whatever.

JC said it best when saying no one listed to him, the Ford Orion he predicted would flop, but went on to be a bestseller. Classic clarkson though.
