Default Turbo Conversion

Hello,

So, I've come to the conculsion that I want to do a turbo conversion to my 1988 Ford Laser TXE ( KE ).

I'll have around $5,000 - 7,000 to do the whole conversion plus some exterior modifications.

I would like to hear suggestions on which motor to go with, plus anything else that I'll need, also some prices and if you know anywhere in Brisbane ( prefabably around Redcliffe area, doesn't really matter though ) that can do the conversion, Well drop a new motor in for me. Also how long will it roughly take to do?

Also any information on compliance plates etc that will need to be done will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

$5k will have you with a nice engine and more. Good to see someone with money and will to do this instead of just the will!

You want a BPT - 1.8L DOHC Turbo from the KF/KH TX3 Turbo. It slides in using the drivers side mounting from the turbo version of your KE.

You also want to get the G series gearbox and driveshafts from the KF/KH TX3 Turbo to go with, as they're twice as strong as what's in your KE TX3 N/A.

Engine about $1500
Gearbox & shafts $1000
The rest on the essentials and mods!

Or you could go all out.. the BPD 1.8L DOHC Turbo from the Mazda Familia GTR. Just expect a half cut to cost about 5k. The difference is it's a hell of a lot tougher than the BPT so can get the huge power to the ground without damage.

Dirty Hands - the Ford Wreckers are still there at Clontarf, I've been there a few times. I'll go down there and see if they've got any motors.

Thanks for the Advice VippIn.

I just have another question, with the BPT 1.8L DOHC Turbo motor and the G Series Gear Box and Drive Shaft will I be able to get a mechanic to just basically drop that into my car? Would the motor come will all the wiring/looms/mainfolds etc - I don't know anything on cars motors, this is why I'm going to get a mechanic to put the motor in.

Oh and, will my exhaust system 2.25in pipes be ok for the new motor and my extractors? or will I be needing to get a new exhaust system?.

I'm gathering that the turbo on the BPT is going to be stock? so what other upgraded turbos will fit with this motor?

Thanks

light vehicle modifications aplication -your answeres may be -- other in most questions

http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/Home...modifications/

you will have to contact them because this modification may need an engineers approval as you are going up to a turbo (blue plate )

so up the brakes etc

and there used to be a few mechanical workshops in that same industrial park at clontarf

2.25 will be fine, but i'd go 2.5 if youre going for really high numbers.

Engine/Box/Shafts will drop in, it's a close fit though. You DO need the DRIVERS SIDE 3 PIECE ENGINE MOUNT FROM A KE FWD TURBO however. Yeah for that price it should come with the looms etc and you need to get an electrician to make it all work.

You know you should jump on www.fordlaser.com because you can probably find someone who's done it before who will do it better and cheaper than a local mechanic.

VippIn I am apart of fordlaser.com I've found a member on there in Brisbane who is willing do the conversion for me, for a good price too!

He suggested that I do a B6T conversion to start off with as it's easier to install and it can be modded to go very hard.

So it looks like ( hopefully ) in the next 2 - 3 months I should have a B6T half cut, engine conversion. The engine is going to be stock at the moment, but I'll probably just get upgraded BOV to replace the stock BOV.

Also, depending on funds, I might upgrade to a frount mount intercooler and upgrade the turbo to VF10.

Wish me luck! LOL.. I'll let you lot know how it all turns out when it gets done

Just remember mate at the end of the day, a BPT will go harder than a B6T. There's a reason why the few running 11s in Lasers, use BPT's.

Good luck champ.

Just an update, if all goes to plan I should have the B6T dropped in by the end of November ..

Now I just can't decide on what little extra upgrades I want to do, like mainly accessories..

So far I'm thinking,

Turbo Timer and Boost Gauge.. What other gauges would anyone suggest?

Not even a boost gauge?

So what'd you think?

Air fuel meter
Oil Temp
Boost Gauge

I'm not sure if that's going to be over kill for when I get the motor dropped in though, as it'll be stock for like the first 2 months... But then again I might as well get it done so when I've upgraded the turbo and upgraded to front mount it might come in handy.

What other mods can be done to the B6T ?
