Default should i buy a clubby if its cheap?

I've been dead set on putting another mustang in my garage, since i sol my last one to get an education.

A friend has ordered a brand new GTO monaro, and has offered me the VT R8 clubby at a very good price with a bit of stereo gear in it.

My dilema is, do i buy it, drive it for a year or 2, sell it for what i paid, lose no money... or buy and sell real quick? or just forget the idea completely?

I'm not a holden boy, but the r8's are very nice cars to drive, and they are quick too :(

if the price is right then buy it. if the price is that good that you wont lose money on it after a month a year or 2 years then definately get it. if you can even make a good profit on it then why not?
make sure you know the full history too...dont forget these are the cars that had piston slap.

The guy is one of my best mates, car was his brothers before he bought it. The whole family has HSV's... like 5 of em. Never pranged, is immaculate condition.

K/m's worry me a little - 115k on a 2000 model

It uses a little bit of oil, and has been approved for the engine rebuild, but he's not bothered to get it done cause it's not very bad.

Another mate of mine paid $35 for the same car about 8 months ago... this one i'm getting will be 10k less with a whole bunch of stereo gear... rockford amps, etc. prolly bout $2500 worth....

What do you's think?

I had the same year model SS, they are a nice car and if you're getting an R8 for $25k and you know the history, I don't think you could go wrong.

thanks for the genuine reply rod, i'm stuck with this decision... The main thing that puts me off hsv's is the amount of tossers driving them, and the ****er attention they generate....

Price sounds good even though its about 30'000kms above average kms.
Father inlaw and uncle have R8's in the model, and are stoked with them.
I am by no means a holden fan, but they arent a bad car.

i only put 8000k's on my xr8 in nearly 2 years... so it'll be sitting most of the time... (this is the reason i sold the xr8, was losing money sitting there) but i sold it for what i paid for it 2 years ago, so i did ok..... if i could do the same on this i guess i'd be happy

i have a work car, thats why i hardly put k/ms on my cars.

But only a bogan would be so one eyed to dismiss the other totally.

The price sounds right....I'd go for it! I reckon VTs were the peak of the Commos styling wise, and it's got the LS1 to back it up.

If you hardly drive at all I wouldn't bother with it, nothing againt's the vehicle but why have it, don't buy it just because you can, and think you will get your money back in 2+ yr's, you never know what might happen in the future, plus you allready said that's the reason why you sold your Mustang.

i sold my mustang about 5 years ago to get an education..... sold my xr8 last week cause i was going to lose money on it if i held it for much longer.....

67 - i have been seriously talking with mustangdave about his 68 coupe... got some big plans for it, 17" torque thrust II or bullit wheels, wild 351W (which i already have in the shed), etc etc.... i don't wanna **** him off by not buying it after all this though. You still got that hoodlining for sale?

Also been looking at a couple of ragtops 67/68's, my dream car...

my opinion, if you wont be driving it to much and you know you can make some money on it, buy it and then sell it not to long after, that way its a quick buck, and later on the track if you want to buy for example a ford, you will have more money to put towards that. Anyway just my opinion

Yeah - still have the hoodlining.
I'd continue with the mustang option, as they still seem to be rising slightly in the states.
Mustang Dave's car sounds like a pretty good deal for the $$$, although I haven't seen it in the metal. The dude who did the conversion has one of the best reputations in the business.

There is nothing quite like driving a mustang!

i'm in much the same dilemmer! To work a holden of buy a lesser ford (in my situ). If you don't care what people think. and you want a nice car to drive, i'd say go for it (i presume 'approved for an engine rebuild' means the warranty rebuild?).

Your savings may be negated by insurance cost. HSV any HSV costs nearly double what a Holden SS would cost.
Where I work for a QLD resident $1000 per yer on max no claim bonus is a starting price for insurance. Holden SS or even a SV8 (supercharged) is way way cheaper

Ive been looking at a VT clubsport R8 too and a vx ss. The clubbie was nearly twice the amount in insurance, so that pritty much killed me getting the R8. So now ive gone back to looking for a vx ss, insurance is still high on that but not like the ridiciulous amount they wanted for the R8. Thing you will have to remember too is a clubbie attracts alot of attention, their always getting badged and people try and damage them on purpose. But it is a very good price his offering it too you for. So if you've got the money, go for it!

As has been said, regardless of brand, a good car is a good car and it shouldnt be dismissed due to the badge on the front of it, unless yuo know you would have issues driving it (no point buying something you dont like).

However, i agree with you about the kms, its not getting any younger, and the fact it is even approved for a rebuild would put me right off it. IMHO, if something is not right from the factory (i.e. using oil), you run a very slim chance of ever getting it right yourself.

I'd be very tempted, a nice car for the cash. If you can go ahead with the rebuild, then I'd probably say yes, but if not... seems like it could cost you too much for what it is. As someone else said, trade it 2 or so years down the track for a decent ford

New VZ SS is 250kw - whats the old clubby R8 - 255kw? I don't think resale will favour the clubby, nor insurance. A VZ SS would be a better buy. b

well if your barely going to drive it its prob not worth spending all that of full comp insurence, the best bet would prob be 3rd party fire and theft anyway.

115,000k's dont worry about that. these things go forever i was speaking to a guy who is right in to the LS1 scene and he picked up a WH statesman for $14,000 with 200,000+k's and he swears its the best STOCK gen III he has ever drivin ( and i think he ended up selling it to a bloke who works at Power Torque ). even an LS1 with Piston slap issues doesnt suffer and Performance decrease at all. there is even a Bloke who has clocked up over half a mill worth of k's, still gping STONG.

Go for it mate and never look back

If its a series 2 clubby R8, then i'd probably go 4 it, even thought I'd have to live with that holden interior.

champ I would ring a holden & pretend you want to trade a car in (give the specs & dates of your mates car) just tell your after a ball park,

I think you finds its about/less than $25k, Remmebering we are now 5 models down the track,VX,VX2,VY,VY2,VZ, the amount of models coming out isn't going to slow down any time soon, so just have in your thoughts,

I love the cars - but the resale is a killer, a mate of mine has a manual clubby not sure if its r8 or not its been 4 sale for months & months price is now $28k
