Default Highway Patrol Option Post VF, FG

Just seen this on car advice, we know Dubai has some of the best Police cars in the world, this video confirms it...

http://www.caradvice.com.au/336109/d...ideo-campaign/

Maybe NSW HWP will acquire similar cars once VF SS's and XR6 Turbo's are gone...

There is probably no 1:1 gap filler ?

One option would be for all Police forces to agree on a "Police Car" standard or standards and go down the path the US have perhaps??? with things like the Taurus or Caprice PPV (but that dies too with Holden right?)

Question is what are the requirements of HWY patrol cars these days?
Many chases are now done via aerial surveillance.

Most of the countries that have 'small' Police cars, or vehicles based on a sports car, don't carry guns, or at least a full utility belt. I remember when they used Subaru's here for the first time , Coppers hated them. Tip your cutlery draw onto the seat or your daily and go for a spin.

It will be odd seeing anything new or different. I think our current batch and livery looks menacing and tough.

It most likely won't happen but Mustang would be perfect with RWD config and looks to suit...

Problem is they buy the SS and XR6Ts at heavily discounted fleet rates, any other performance car wont be able to be bought at such low prices.

I suspect it will be end of hi-po highway patrol cars.

Maybe not, the public in Australia are gouged when it comes to European cars (compared to what they sell for in other countries).

I think the govt. could get there hands on BMW's, Merc's, Audi's etc.. for half of what we are charged.
And if they do they would then sell them once they hit their expiry date for not much less than what they paid for them.

I often say that Toyota need to engineer a four-door sedan out of their apparently excellent-handling 86 platform.

Maybe an aftermarket refurbishment program will come along to support the large fleets of Falcons and Commodores once production ends, much like the US has for the Crown Vics. The car manufacturers should setup their own program for this too, for a source of income and to provide jobs.

Exactly right on the government prices for vehicles. A friend through their government agency they work for can purchase vehicles at government rate plus 10%. They purchased a Ranger XLT for $40K on road.

They would just need to put a real engine in it. I'd imagine it would take forever to catch up to a speeder with that gutless 2.5 boxer.

Actually a 2.0L boxer, and yes it does need replacing with this motor:

Sweet, at $100k that will mean they'll be atleast half as many cop cars on the road.

I know in SA the police aren't allowed to continue a pursuit if the suspect is driving dangerously-so they ALL drive dangerously in order to drop the police. They don't NEED performance cars with this type of limp wristedness going on.

Most people can be apprehended with a police car that is powered by a 1.3 litre engine.

those that run for it usually end up around a pole even with a gutless divvy van in pursuit.

This nonsense of police needing high powered V8 cars is simply not reality.

They have a radio that works faster than any hoon can get across a suburb.

What about getting to a scene of an accident? If the cop can get there 1min faster he might be able to drag someone out of a burning car before they die a firey death...

From what I see of them they spend alot of time heading out to accidents on a main highway near me, not chasing hoons.

i would disagree Zilo , there are circumstances where seconds count, an armed assailant in your house with your wife and kids ......do you really want the police responding from across the burbs in a barina spark ???
and yes radios are pretty good at times ...... but not always.

As far as NSW goes, I don't know for the other states, all of our Police fleet vehicles are no longer bought but leased. That is why you don't see any ex HWP vehicles from NSW at GVT auction anymore.

I am out of the coppers now but a few of the boys I know in traffic services have been told that NSW will be going to use the mustang for HWP duties, with the turbo 4 being used in metro areas and the V8 being used in country areas. I have no doubt they will be looking at other options as well and still will use the commodore until it ceases production but apparently the stang is definitely a go.

HWP do definitely need high performance vehicles. It is not all about pursuits. HWP are more often than not the first ones at incidents like shootings, riots, prangs, domestics, armed robs, person on premises etc. while our core function is traffic enforcement, we still attend these other incidents to back up the General Duties guys.

As far as pursuits go, high performance vehicles are a requirement there too. It takes less effort to keep up with and chase an offender in a HWP vehicle than a generic sedan. Remember while the offender does not have to give any regard to everything around him, we still have to chase with the best interest and safety of the public in mind, eg we won't just punch through an intersection in a pursuit, we slow a bit, ensure it is clear, then we need that higher performance vehicle in order to make up the lost ground from clearing the intersection safely. There are a thousand more examples as well but mainly that power is needed due to the extra requirement we have to pursue safely. If all we had to do was chase the car like on a race track then yeah, give us a Camry, we will catch him. But, it doesn't work that way. Anyone who has been in a pursuit or urgent duty run through traffic will soon vouch for that.

Bear in mind we are also more highly trained than your average officer too. Not anyone can jump in and drive a NSW HWP vehicle. You need to have completed and passed (not everyone makes it through) a further five day intensive training course over and above the standard course for all officers in order to gain high speed and pursuit certification. This course is only open to HWP trainees. Even the commissioner can't jump in a HWP vehicle and do an urgent duty run in it. He is not certified.

Don't ex lease vehicles still get sold at auction? SA closed their govt auctions a few years ago instead letting pickles do the work.
