Ford
XY GTHO Phase 3
XA GT Coupe RPO83 Option
XW GTHO Phase 2
FG F6 Typhoon
XR GT
TE50 Series 3

Holden
LX Torana A9-X
HT "Bathurst" Monaro 350 GTS
VL "Walkinshaw" SS Group A
LJ Torana GTR XU-1
HSV Coupe4
W427

On pure muscle terms, it is tough to defend the Coupe4, as by definition muscle "should" be rear while drive only to allow classic "two turning, two burning" power oversteer. It earns its place in my list for being the first to give us some AWD performance.

OK people the results are in! I have summarised the models by their model designation only. So for example a Phase 3 XY GTHO will simply come under XY, along with votes for stock XY GT's.
I have listed the cars in order of popularity - with the total number of votes in brackets. I've listed the Top 10 only.
Drum roll please.....

FORDS:
1. XY GT (28)
2. XA GT (25)
3. XR GT (19)
4. XW GT (16)
=5. XB GT (15)
=5. FPV F6 (15)
6. XC COBRA (14)
7. XE ESP (12)
8. T SERIES (11)
9. FPV GT (4)
10. FPV GT MK2 (3)

HOLDENS:

1. Older Monaros (39)
2. A9X Toranas (25)
3. XU1 Toranas (19)
4. Brock VK Grp A (16)
5. Torana sedans inc SLR 5000 etc. (15)
6. VN Grp A SS (11)
7. VL Walkinshaw (9)
8. HQ GTS 350 (8)
9. W427 (7)
10. VS GTS R (6)

So there you have it! The XY remains KING of Fords, but the older Monaros remain top of the heap as an overall fave for Holdens. Not surprising I suppose.

I think the surprises out of all of this is the rise of the Grp A Brock, and on the lower end of the scale the HQ GTS? I couldn't believe that? I also reckon the VS GTS R is a sleeper as far as growing populaity....

On the Ford side of the fence I'm disappointed at how little ineterst there is with E Series GT's? But blown away by the value placed on the T Series Falcons!
But the biggest grower in 'LEGEND' status has got to be the rise of the mighty F6. We have a new legend....

On a personal front Im very pleased to see the XE ESP right up there! Gotta love the 80's!!

And for all you old skoolers - the XR GT remains alive and well. It's status remains as KING PIN!

For Holden what about the 427 monaro (came out in 03 i think), the coupe 4, and the callaway powered hsvs, they were well ahead of the rest in terms of power output for there time.

And the facts remain that the XU1 in most tests was a 16 second car, same as most of the Monaros. It is an unpalatable fact for some, but still a fact. We have had Monaros, and an XU1 in the household so I have nothing against them. But standard they were dogs.

You have to compare apples with apples.
Yes, the standard LC & LJ GTR's ran high 16's - 17 flat, the equivalent Ford XR & XT GT's were low 16's - 16 flat. So not a huge amount of difference.
The Bathurst spec LC & LJ GTR XU1's ran between 15's down to mid 14's. The equivalent XW & WY GTHO's were running mid to low 14's.
Thats my research done for the day !!!!

Not to mention that the XU1s by comparison had a little 6 cylinder compared to the GTs/GTHOs at the time. They were made to handle. Not to be a 1/4 mile superstar.

That's why they outgunned the GTHOs in the wet at Bathurst.

Okay,

Here's my reply. In some cases, where two or more models have a similar body, I've chosen the model that I think has the best styling.

FoMoCo

XW GTHO Ph II. Far more aggressive styling than an XY. Less of a road car compromise than teh XY GTHO Ph III.
1961 Tank Fairlane with 332 Interceptor Engine. This, along with the OHV Customline, was THE car to beat at the traffic lights in the 1960's.
ZC Fairlane with T Code 351.
XB GT Coupe. Most aggressive, streamlined of the three (XA, XB, XC)
XC Fairmont GXL, 5.8 Engine.
BF GT. 315 kw manual.

GM-H
HT GTS 350 Manual (totally different to the automatic). Looks so much better than the mechanically downgraded HG.
LC GTR XU-1. Purer styling that the LJ.
VC HDT Group 3.
HK GTS 327. Raw, race car for the street.
LX A9-X Hatchback. Flares, bonnet scoop, big wheels, drop tank. Wow.
W427. How much power can you have?

Now for the Wild Card Entry.

Chrysler Australia.
1962 S Series Manual. Over the top styling. The first clear demonstration of what was later called: "Chrysler engine superiority."
VG E34 Coupe.
VH E49. Sucko Ford.
CJ Sedan, 360 CID. Comfort & pace wrapped in styling excess.
CL Charger Drifter. Similar package to that used by the NSW Highway Patrol. Good looks and plenty of grunt.
AP3 Chrysler Royal V-8. Another of those street sleepers.

Leyland Australia.

P76 Targa Florio.
P76 Executive, V-8 4 speed manual. A car that slips right under the radar.

Mmm,

I posted my reply on reading some of page 1. I didn't see that you'd 'closed' it off.

If you're going to make a group called 'old Monaros' (presumably HK, HT, HG), then in fairness, you have to have a group called 'old Falcons' (XR, XT, XW, XY).

You should split the Monaros up, by model, as you have the Falcons.

interesting list though.

Six is too many for both brands(Ford/GM) in Oz-You need to go to US musclecars to find those kind of numbers.

Ford
XY GTHO phase 3
FG F6
ED Sprint
AU 3 TE50

Holden
Torana A9X
VN GRP A
VE2 GTS

The rest are pretenders-considering,performance.handling and collectabilty...............some mediocre stuff on some of the lists-plenty of styling-plenty of cubes-but still pretenders....... sorry.
.......oh and one from Chrysler Oz-the E49 Charger RT.

i'd hardly call an EL GT a pretender for the day and age it was released... same with the VS GTS-R
the VE2 GTS is a pretender

Its all in the eye of the beholder. The ultimate incarnation of the Windsor in Australia is the AU3 TE50
The A9X is better than the L34.The XY HO is better than the XW HO
You'd want to drive the better version I'd think.
The VE2 GTS canes its opposition from Oz and the US -in the latest edition of Motor
Its the real deal-credit where credit's due.

I completely agree. Makes no sense to say "older monaros" but specify XY then XW etc. Also, isnt a HQ GTS 350 an older monaro?

Yeah your point about grouping Monaros together is fair. The first list I pulled together was a preliminary list - a summary - I'll pull together more detailed survey results.

It's like FPV don't insist on the F6 being in these comparisons, it is like they deliberately downplay the car to try and leave the GT with the appearance of being the Halo car. They understate the F6 in product (externally subdued) and also in marketing and publicity. Seems very stupid to me.
