Default Antivirus and Firewall ??

Hi all

I have had the final straw with Norton Internet security, seem evey month I have to un-install and re-install it. Not only that I haven't had this computer working as fast in ages now that I got rid of it.

The question I have is what is AVG(free version) like and is the windows built in Firewall good enough?

Thanks

I'd say Na, Get a copy of Trend PC-cillin, for the anti-virus, often rated better than Symantec's. Also has firewall, but I dont know how good it is I dont really worry cause I got a Router. Are you dial-up or Broadband?

Norton works but it has become so bloated with useless crap that its not a piece of software to recommend, and it is so resource hungry it will slow older PCs to a crawl.

AVG free (now Ver seven) is top stuff, thoroughly recommend it, have never had a major infection past it across hundreds of machines. And the new version will auto update without intervention on broadband. Its top stuff. The paid AVG is great too.

Windows firewall I wouldn't rely on, because anything m$crosoft will be the target for hackers. It works but like nortons its an interfering pain in the "where you sit down."

I use PC-Cillin and the last time I installed it I had to start my comp in safe mode to get it run.. but I reinstalled it again and it works great....It picked up 24 infected files on my PC that Norton knew nothing about... Plus that dofus on the Norton box (Dr Norton??) turns me off the product :

I have AVG running and it seems pretty good so far.

My recommends Vet (its australian too) as one of the best bar none. Stacks of regular updates and not expensive to renew, plus decent support. When I could be bothered upgrading my virus stuff, I'll be grabbing it myself.

www.vet.com.au (i think)

PC Cillin and Sygate personal firewall pro on both machine. Excellent combination.

Also gave IE the flick ages ago and use Firefox exclusivly now, much faster and much less pop up junk.

AVG is great, does so much and chews so little memory. Nothing has got passed it yet. Its great with it auto update feature, means I never have to think of it.

AVG,for me, only prob with v7 is you have to download updates yourself where v6 did it auto when on the net.
As for firewall run windows and no probs.

Thank you all for the help.

I installed AVG and ZoneAlarm and I can't believe I put up with NIS for so long, my system is so much faster. My sanity has been restored.

I use AVG plus Sygate plus SpyWare Blaster plus Ad-Aware (all freebies), also using Win Patrol, I am beginning to think that if I get much more protection on my PC even I wont be able to access it!!!!!!! : : :

I use NIS 2005 pro and never had a problem with it or any previous version.
I guess on older computers, it will cause "slow down" problems, but on higher spec PCs shouldnt cause any performance issues.

Still got Nortons, only cos it was free '2005'.
Had AVG a few years ago, but a couple of trojans got through so ditched it and used any freebies that came along, Nortons has been alright so far so maybe the V7 will be better, also have Zone Alarm, was rated highly in the NZ Netguide so found a free version for 12 months. Also using Ad-Aware SE Personal, Microsoft Anti-Spyware and No-AdWare, no probs as of yet.

AVG is a fine no frills FREE AV program. If you do not want to spend money, get AVG + MS XP firewall (inc with SP2) and Microsoft Antispyware Beta.
It will provide you with good protection for $0.
