Cool Falcon Nissan ute

I had a heated debate today with a bloke who knows everything about cars
now I know that Ford and Nissan swapped cars in the eighties
but he says that in 1986 Falcon utes came out with RB30 motors
just like the VL Commodores he reckons about 50 were made with 5 speed manuals before Ford was ready for unleaded fuel
I tried to say about the Nissan utes but he was adament that Ford used the Nissan motor
anyone heard this
John

I'm pretty sure they were exactly the same, just with a different badge and a better warranty

Nissan did sell a badge engineered XF or XG ute for a while. From what I remember the only Nissan part was the badge, and even that was glued directly on the Ford badge.

I own a 'Nissan' XF ute.

They are Falcon in every way, except for the logbook, front grille badge, steering wheel center badge, hubcaps, tailgate sticker, compliance plate, and the keys are just blank ribbing - no Ford / Family of fine cars.

It's the original motor, as the numbers match, and they used metric piston rings, (usually found in the EFI crossy's) instead of imperial rings.

Cool Re: Falcon Nissan ute

J3T ute
would an RB30 pull a Patrol along
thought it would be too gutless down low
and yes I know Fords and everyone else
went to unleaded fuel in 1986 1st of March I think from memory
he said this was prior to Unleaded
just like the black motor VKs till the VLs with the RB30 were released
good to hear from you all but I told him no way
anyway we left it at that

John
They go alright, for a small engine in a heavy car
They were in the GQ range ,and Nissan in the earlier MQ/Mk patrols had the L28 (2.8 L ) six which was the same as the Z cars, and those things go alright in the patrol also ....
Darn thirsty tho ,both the 2.8 and the 3 L have been known to be as thirsty as the larger 4.2 L petrol, well little engine working hard will use fuel ....
Turboing the RB30 is the 2nd most common turboed patrol engine behind the 4.2 L diesel , but they both aren't a match for the 4.2 petrol .....
Ive got a few patrols here and have had many over the years

Back on topic ,
Never ever heard of a Nissan RB30 in a ford, and im sure the XFN utes were made at ford, and simply rebadged, unless a memory fade, the compliance plate should have Ford of Australia on it , but memory does tricky things ...

As a parts and service manager at a Ford dealership in that era I can categorically state that NO the falcon did not have a Nissan motor , they were simply rebadged , they were a lemon for Nissan sales and sat in lots until given away .

One of the motoring mags did a test and found the photocopied instructions in the glovebox of how to pry the Ford badge off the grille and glue the Nissan badge in its place.

Tell you mate he is an idiot.

If you want to draw a long bow, this was probably the beginning of the end for Falcon as the decision to "badge share" was the start of the Button plan.
Brand sharing and end of tariffs to create a level playing field for imported and local car makers.
Senator John Button's path to destruction!

I think this was late in the xf ute range. 90-92. Don't know of any XG Nissans. Ford was running out the carby Xflow then in the ute range, why would they chuck a Nissan engine in them????

A mate of mine has a RB30 Patrol that has been swapped for a VL Turbo RB30. He's blown the motor up twice due to not cooling the thing properly. There meant to go alright though. He's got the cooling fixed in his latest build which hopefully will get on the road again soon. Interestingly Nissan never turboed the RB30.

The RB30 would have been gutless in an XF. The XF Xflow didn't make much power, but at least it had torque. The RB30 NA were not known for torque or power. The VL was light and compared to the earlier Holden sixes felt like a rocket.

Its sad how little effort was made in this period to differentiate badge engineered cars. Dark times indeed.

I always thought this was after the 'break up' with holden (Pulsar/Astra) which would have put it around 88? Still see the occasional one getting around, gives me a giggle.

Ask your mate if Lexcens ran the toyota v6

The Nissan ute was a rebadge ford ute like the Toyota lexen being a rebadge commodore, same running gear.
These were the idea's of a world car program that failed.

The Button plan.

The idea was reduce the tariffs on import cars, and expose the local manufactures to competition from other products.

By badge engineering, the theory was that technologies/equipment would be shared amongst the companies eventually...

By the end of buttons plan, we lost a number of locally produced vehicle lines, Ford had been build the Telstar here, until it was replaced by a Nissan built corsair...then Nissan shut up shop, and it was replace by an imported Telstar...

And the plan effects us to this day.

there goes my plan of a VF badged as a Lexcen so I don't need to start at that horrible lion badge.

Anyone seen a weird 80s or early 90s holden van that resembles a Nissan urvan? Think from trying to decipher the rotting badges it was badged Holden Shuttle Bus.
