He would have been induced initially but I'd be surprised if he was still being kept in a coma. The longer you spend in a coma the more complications that can arise.
I fear that this is all quite a bad indication.

it may be akin to burying my head in the sand, but i'm going to disregard the recent news as just pure speculation. MS's doctors haven't released any news to the public and are keeping a pretty tight lid on things, so most of it is just speculation (of course, some of it is from very experienced doctors) and until such time as some definitive news is given, i will continue to remain hopeful that he will pull through!

come on schu, one more lap.

Interesting headline, if you read it carefully it is reporting not on his condition, but on the rumor of his condition.

I'm with you on this, unless it comes from his surgeon and or his management team then I'll treat all else with a grain of salt.

I am still confident he'll pull through...he better!!!

To be fair yesterdays news was hype and a load of rubbish from a random neurologist speaking attention.

He will have permanent damage when they decide to wake him up, it might be a lot it might be not noticeable. We won't know until that happens, there's plenty of people walking around today that have half their brain blown out, sometimes you get the damage in a spot you don't need so much sometimes you get unlucky. Keeping him in a coma is to give him the best chance to recover with the least damage possible, nothing more. They won't wake him up until all the bruising has gone and everything has healed imho. Could take a while.

Each day that passes with Michael still in a coma is making the chances of a full recovery look less likely. I hope he wakes up soon.

I saw an interesting story in the comments on one of today's news articles on Schumacher. It was posted by a guy who was in a coma for a full month, basically identical damage to Schumachers although probably not in the same parts of the brain. He was saying the recovery took a long time and yes not the same plus has epilepsy now, but nine years on he's reading writing and walking just fine. He said Mike if I can do it you can too, good comment it was. From what I read six months is the longest people have done an induced coma for and recovered but I understand the usually semi wake you up regularly throughout to see how well your brain is firing back up. Once it looks like it'll run at full power without swelling, then they wake you all the way up. If you can.

Schumacher begins 'gradual awakening': sources

Michael Schumacher is slowly being woken from his medically-induced coma and is responding positively to treatment, a French newspaper reports.

The German Formula One champion has been in a coma since December 29 after a skiing accident in France in which he struck his head on a rock.

He is now in his fifth week of being comatose.

Sources told the French sports newspaper L'Equip medical staff attending the seven-time world champion began a "gradual awakening" yet there are fears he could remain in a vegetative state even if the process is successful.

"After four consecutive weeks in a coma, Michael Schumacher has been placed, according to our information, in a phase of gradual awakening. It is a slow and uncertain process of return," the newspaper wrote.

But the awakening process can be arduous and a patient's final result often remain uncertain.

A spokesperson for 45-year-old Schumacher said claims about the racing champion remaining in a vegetative state are speculative.

"I insist again on the fact that any statement on the health of Michael Schumacher that does not come from the medical team in charge or his management is just speculation," the spokesperson said.
Fingers crossed this is the first of more good news!

Apparently he's being slowly woken now and responding well (only an anonymous source from the hospital). Not sure how many days they stagger that process over but it looks like we will know something soon. Wishing him luck.

As much as I would love for that to be true until it comes from the mouth of the doctors, his family and or the management team I take it with a grain of salt. To much speculation not enough facts out there right now.

As above, I was watching the autosport live feed of the Jerez test and just now they are reporting his management has confirmed they are backing off the sedation.

My understanding of how they do it. Is wake you up half way, ask you your name etc, monitor the brain activity then put you asleep again, they do this for some days before fully backing off the drugs. At least that's what I read.

More good news for your night sleepers when you wake up. They are now saying Michael blinked during early brain testing and has now responded to simple instructions.

Not the kind of update we were hoping for.....

Schumacher battling pneumonia, lung infection
ninemsn staff
5:30am February 13, 2014

Formula One legend Michael Schumacher, who is still lying in a coma in a French hospital, is now battling pneumonia after contracting a lung infection.

The effects on the fragile state of health of the 45-year-old were unknown, German newspaper Bild said, without citing sources.

Schumacher's spokeswoman, Sabine Kehm, told the newspaper: "We are not commenting on speculation."

Schumacher has been in a coma since his December 29 ski accident, when he badly injured his head, causing serious swelling of the brain.

The doctors treating him in the hospital in the French city of Grenoble two weeks ago said they were trying to coax him out of the coma by reducing his sedation.

Kehm said the process could take some time.

With little information being given to media, the hospital has been left to fend off rumours. Last Thursday, it had to deny speculation flaring on social networks that Schumacher had died.
