Tonkin Engineers do many genre's of engineering. From Domestic housing, commercial and structural applications and it includes vehicle modifications.

I used to engage Tonkin Engineers for some of my soil reports and footing designs for houses I designed a while back.

Default Re: engineer Adelaide

trying to see whats involved with upgrading (?) 3/4 tonner to 1 tonner

but i am now taking a breather and going to rethink the whole situation, as in how badly do I really want this Gilflite box on the back of a ute?
Putting the ute over weigh bridge recently we popped 2.18T given that a new C/Chassis weighs1.606T supposedly the box weighs 574kg whereas from factory they weigh 350kg

Granted we added extra marine ply and insulation when I first got it for a previous business.
GVM Kerb Mass Gilflite estimated
1 tonner C/C 2820kg 1606 574 2180 640 spare
3/4 " C/C 2510kg 1747 574 2321 189
XR6 sports 3/4 C/C 2325kg 1600 574 2174 136
XR6 1 tonner C/C 2820kg 1615 574 2189 631

So with the 3/4 tonner I dont have a lot of legal spare weight.
What are my chances of finding FG11 1 tonner XR6 in Kinetic Blue

However I have just been made aware of a bare Gilflite box sitting in a 'herbal tomato' farm' around Virginia. So after my holidays I may pay that a visit. It should be around 330kg

Cheers Dhru, that first one nice ute but ugly blue
will chase up the Chassistech in the morning thanks.

Have sent questions to both others,

Looking at wheels would be a fair guess on 3/4 or 1 tonner? correct?

1st one would be my pick... mainly coz it looks the best kept and fits the brief. The Blue is ok... not as vibrant as some, maybe !??
It's got the 17s Ford fitted to 1T XRs

The base Ute could be anything... hard to tell from just the pics.

The FG1 could be a Tonner... They could be original wheels (which would suggest 3/4T) or maybe retro fitted at some point in the last 14yrs !??
Could've been a styleside and had a tray retrofitted !??

Would be helpful if they spelled out that info

D.

Shouldn't be too bad if you give them a clear plan

ie rear springs, suitably rated wheels, Goodyear Cargo G26 tyres, Suspension level / headlight re-aim.

More so if you share your plan to use OEM parts where engineering has been done and approved (thus the nominated wheels/tyres i.e. 750-850kg rating per tyre).... all sourced from 1 tonner / RTV .

Tokin replied not feasible, nothing from the others. Same as car sales, 1 email reply sold the others zip nothing.

Everything on hold for a month or so, too much else going on.

What actually is the difference between a 1 tonne and non 1 tonne ute from factory? Is it literally just springs and wheels or is there differences in the chassis, brakes, cooling etc??

Basically you're just after an increase to GVM if I've understood the thread correctly. Maybe see if some of the shops that do GVM upgrades to 4wd can help you out.

thats what I am after Prydey. They must be busy as not to reply to emails, how hard is that.

The one reply ....Tony

You will be stuck with the GVM that the vehicle has and will need to manage the payload to suit.

There are no GVM upgrade options for those vehicles.

The 1 tonner has different suspension, rear axle ratings and wheels and tyres so to make an XR able to be a 1 tonner you will be throwing away all the bits that makes it an XR model.
f you love your Fords and wans a 1 tonne payload, Go buy a new Ranger V6.

funny bugga NOT. Not interested Id say.

I know there was changes to the rules around gvm upgrades. Not sure if it was only some states or nationally. Upgrades are now required to be done prior to registration. I know that doesn't help you out.

Lovells are a second stage manufacturer. If anyone could do anything I reckon they could, but yeah, the change in rules a few years back may be working against you.
