Am I right in thinking we only got a few *proper* RS2000's, and they were 75(?) models, 2 door and manual with a higher tune engine, then the 77's were just a plain 2litre escort with the slant nose and alloys?

Common conception was 2 door, but there were 4 door "Proper" ones.

One of my customers picked up a 2 door RS2000 that he spotted in a backyard in Swan Hill, offered the owner $550 which he accepted! Interestingly the owner was a wealthy car nut, and from memory had recently purchased some late model/new exotic car. The RS was a runner and even had a near new set of tyres and a spare set of alloys, gave it a wash and a tune, took it in for a RWC and it's on the road. Rust free and straight, the red paint is a bit weathered, but he is in love with it and takes pride in driving the hell out of it. Was having a chat with him last Saturday, and told me he was offered $4000, to which I replied "Did ya tell 'em to get lost!". Will have to catch up with him next time and get a photo of it. That's right, $550 for a practically roadworthy RS2000 2 door. I thought I did well picking up a registered WB Statesman for $800......

What I think he his getting at are the 75 odd German spec RS's we got.

Oz was the only country to do 4 door ones IIRC.

Loco, that story makes me tear up.

25 Mk1 RS2000 in '75, 25 MK11 RS2000 in '76 - magic number for homogolation

Age old argument over wheather the AUS cars were "real" RS2000s...

While the AUS spec cars did not get the dual tract manifold and pancake aircleaner, ran Scheel seats instead of Recaro fishnets, did not have a cubby in the dash but rather got the glovebox, ran rear sway bar instead of radius arms (however this swaybar was solid mounted to the chassis and was set up to operate as radius arms), and ran the heavy duty body (all AUS MK11 shells were the same Heavy Duty type the German RS2000 was based on, just did not get the rear radius arm mounts) - they did share the front nose cone, rear spoiler, 5 dial dash, short throw gear lever, 3 spoke soft touch steering wheel and the iconic RS2000 decals....
Both the two door and four door models had their own designated Model number for the rather short production period from 5/79 to 12/80 (11918 & 11938 respectively) - can't get any more real than that....and given the short production run commonly reported as 2,444 units, much rarer than their European counterparts.

As a curious side note - in 1977 the AUS 2lt Rally Pack was homogolated as "flat nose RS2000" as a local market variation - this was done to validate running flat nose RS2000's on the intertnational rally circuit. The Rally Pack was not a desiginated model number nor idenitifed under an option number on the complace plates -it was simply a 'tick the box' option when ordering and could be added to any model in the range (except the RS2000 of course).

Cheers

European RS2000s got 13x6(?) four spoke alloys, AUS got 'stylised' steel rims in 13 x5.5 with 13x5.5 GLobe Volante wheels an xtra cost optional extra.
Different side stripes as well, Euro got a 2 element pinstripe on the waist line, AUS got a 12(? - have to go and count 'em...) element stripe in line with front to rear bumpers.
Extra HP for the Euro spec (not inc the 25 German homogolation specials) was derived from the dual tract exhaust manifold and pancake filter assy - dual 44IDFs, Group 1 Head, Group 1 Cam, etc were optional extras and not sandard on the run of the mill Euro cars. AUS cars had basically a std 2lt engine - wack on a set of HM headers and you magically had the same power output as a 'real' RS2000.

Also, to call the 25 German Homomgoation specials the only 'real' RS2000s is akin to calling the RPO83 XAs the only real GTs......

It is truly a sad day when we see any car violated, particulalry a classic Ford....:(

That being said, it seems this punter finally figured out that his rusted out kitted up VL Turbo was ugly as sin and figured it would not be too hard to wrap a decent looking light weight body around his old running gear.... to each their own I spose - and he only wants 30k for a rolling shell too.....

Cheers

Well it wouldn't even get $10k for the rolling shell.

I dont mind retro'ing cars, but he could have brought a faker to do it with for alot less!

Maybe the add is full of BS.

JimmyD...20 years with the RS is a long time. well done. n the 90's i had a lovely little Rally Pack that i sold and have regretted that move every day. i bought my RS in about 2000 as a shell and have built it from there. could do with a bit of a freshen up, but it is an awesome car to drive. like you, i wont part with it. i have learnt the hard way.

Very few general X-Pack RS2000s were sold because they were very expensive dealer option in the UK. Plus RS2000s were like red rags to an insurance company. My uncle worked for Ford and all the employees wanted them, but none of them could afford the insurance let alone the X-pensive X-pack options.
Most of the x-packs out there are just standard cars with the fibresports kit fitted. Theres a couple in Melbourne and I even thought of fitting a kit to my old RS 2dr but at the time it was going to cost me $2400 to get one sent over from the UK. Even though the exchange rate is better now, its still a 3 month wait on kits from Smith & Deakin and cash upfront.
I would love if someone started doing kits here in Oz. I'd be the first customer.

Geez now I'm in trouble, my 12 year old son races a 76 4 door RS 2000 (in my avatar he had just passed an XF falcon 250 in junior class last year) in dirt circuit racing adult 4 cyl class, similar to JimmyD's blue one in the post above. No longer recognisable as an Escort from the front after two write offs, But as not many see the front I guess its not too bad, backs still OK. His mother races a TC Cortina 2 litre in the same class.
About to build him a new car from a 78, 2 litre rally pack but using the RS running gear.

I saw a white 2dr RS 2000 X-pack in Newcastle I didn't manage to speak to the owner, but as close as I could get it look genuine. I love them they scream "Zakspeed"
