Default Ford Capri Vin/chassis number

Hi
I have just brought a ford capri rolling shell from ebay for $600
Dont know if it is a 69 or 70`s model
I havent picked it up yet as when i contacted him he said he had no papers and the car has no tags only the numbers stamped in the radiator support pannel does anyone know if this is enough info for it to be re registered once its ready too.

This is what he wrote:
ford capri rolling shell, was going to be next project but same old story have to get rid of a couple,body is in good condition,rust in usual places ,front of sill panels and front floor an couple small spots around car,1/4 panels,turret,are in great condition has fibre glass bonnet and all moulds,glass,doors,dash, and other various pieces, would suit drag car or restoration,has no tags but has numbers on radiator support panel

Welcome to the Forums

Check with your state Rego authority as to what they require. If the car has not come from interstate things are usually more straightforward as it will have a previous registration history.

mate are you using it for spares or doing it up for a street driven car..is it going to be all original....

mate good luck if he told you that there was plates or no plates ,its going to be hard unless you now were there is a wreak that has a complinance plate and knock it of from there ,,lol

well mate keep us informed unles your having second toghts about it now you can tell him to jam ..it if your worryed about it and wait for anther buy...

Hey mate
I was going to restore it to origanal condition, Found out its a 69 1600gt and been told they never had complience plates on them in 69(not from the seller).
But when i got there it needed alot more work done then he had said, 75-85% of the car is great condition but from the front door sills up is pretty much stuffed,The engine bay and gearbox tunnel has been hacked and bashed to piece to fit a v8,the bit of floor rust isnt very bad but the sills are pretty bad but them 2 are pretty repairable its just the engine bay and gearbox tunnel thats going to be a big job if it can be done at all.So only because it was a gt and i thought it was worth trying to salvage because the back end was so good i offerd him a lower price and took it.

But my next step is trying to find a decent front half cut i can use to save all that time and effort in trying to repairing the engine bay even if its a 70`s model i will just use my slam panel where there chassis code is so no one that isnt smart enough will know its not the origanal front end there for no longer an origanal gt.

Will keep u updated anyway, if i have too i can make my money back in all the parts anyway,but hope to restore her to her glory days

The chassis code for a 1600GT should start with CK17 with the next letter being J for 1969 OR K for 1970. If it starts with CK14 then it isn't a GT, but a Deluxe model. Also, as the last 3 1600GTs were built in January 1970, it's highly unlikely to be one of them, though you never know! If you can post the complete chassis number or at least the first 6 characters, I can tell you what month she was built also. eg. CK17JK12345 which means:
C = Australia
K = Homebush (assembly plant)
17 = GT OR 14 = Deluxe
J = 1969 OR K = 1970
K = October
12345 = Production Sequence Number

These 1969 Capri's did have a compliance plate affixed on the right hand side front inner guard, that is, inside the engine bay.

"C" stood for England because that is where the body originally was assembled.

"K" is Sydney (yes, it was Homebush) assembly plant which is where the imported complete kit was finally assembled.

The code for Australia is "J"

That's my memory of it anyhow unless someone has some "official" documentation to prove me wrong.

T3Man you are partially right!

'B' is the code for Ford of Britain, whereas the 'C' code stands for Australia, as a Ford of Britain affiliate. We got the 'C' code here because the Capri was a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) kit, the kit being manufactured at Halewood in Liverpool, England and then imported into Australia, where the actual cars were assembled at 'K' which stands for Homebush, Ford Australia's assembly plant in NSW at the time.

And yes, you are right, Australia's code is 'J' but this is for cars manufactured and assembled in Australia from go to whoa, like the Falcon, Fairlane and Territory!

Thanks for the replys its a 69gt The chassis code is ck17jr52728.
It doesnt have that vehicle indentication plate on it though.
The front end is pretty stuffed up though, i will post the pics i have taken of the front end damage The rest is no problem to fix.

Will get some better eng bay pics when the sun isnt so bright

Yep, so it's a 1969 1600GT manufactured in June (sixth letter of the code 'R'). On the engine bay side of the right hand suspension tower, scratch the paint off and you'll find the engine number, not that that will help you much as you don't have it, but that's where it is on the body. See attached photo as an example.

If it were me, I'd be using it as parts and looking for a better body, unless you've got plenty of time, patience, ability and/or money!

I was thinking about using it as parts but arfter seeing this post ive decided to give it a try the the sills and apillar are the worse the rest of the car is easy to fix.
Also ive been looking but havent came across another 69 yet.
Ive found a front cut though in good condition i can get the parts i need off.

I speak for NSW only ... as long as the body number doesn't come up on any "stolen" register you should be OK. All you need to do is have a receipt showing proof of ownership (by yourself and also preferably from the seller if he has one). When you get a "blue slip" there is an extra section that they will complete to cover you for the fact that it doesn't have a build plate or compliance plate.

Hi people,
Ive taken down the numbers stamped
in th engine bay,
Ive worked out what the first letters and numbers but not sure what the rest mean. CK17KB32153P
Any help be greatfull.
as this was a drag car
It also has the corner strengthing and 3 bolts to cross member and the sunk in battery box in the engine bay ?V6 GT or 1600 GT?

Hi Automann,

CK17KB will be a September 1970 Capri V6GT, and the extra bits you describe also point to a V6 Capri. To be 100% sure I'd have to see the car in person, but it sounds like your car was a V6.

I would concur with Cosworthfreaks info. Sounds like a V6 shell - should also have a shorter radiator cowl from bonnet slam panel to radiator face. About 6inch rather than 8-ish for 4cyl.

Also, by Aug 1970 (at least) the seatbelt mounting points were near the top of the B pillar like modern cars. The 1969 cars had them about half way towards rear under the rear side 'D' window (like my old 69 1600GT). Folklore suggests they were moved in UK pressings to conform to some svedish svafety reg.... and the Capris came to OZ in CKD form.

What does all the other numbers mean, is there anyway to find out what colour the car was originally.
As it missing the i.d plate from repainting before i got it.

The easiest way to do that is too look in places that are often missed during a respray such as rear parcel shelf, behind kick panels or back seat or even inside the boot around say the fuel tank.
