I'd love to get up close and personal with this GT. Would be one of those cars I could sit happily and look at for a long time!

Although I'd like to follow that up with a rip around a track.

Here's What Changed On The Ford GT For Production

Last month a photo of what was supposedly a production-intent Ford GT surfaced on the Internet. Turns out, that photo was of a production-intent Ford GT buck. As in, it wasn't a real car, just a design buck. That was then, this is now. Ford quietly placed a real working Ford GT that is, for all intents purposes, ready for production in its booth at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show.

To be more specific, an unconfirmed source told us this white-on-red example is supposedly the first VP1 prototype complete with production-ready design and equipment. We've reached out to Ford for comment and confirmation. Ford confirmed the car is production intent, but said it's still a development vehicle and as such, things are subject to change. Ford was unwilling to confirm what level of build it is, whether it is a VP1, or even what VP1 officially stands for.

ALSO SEE: Hellcat-Powered Jeep Grand Cherokee Here By End Of 2017: Official

Matt Leaver from Ford Performance Communications told us this white-on-red GT is fully street legal and could be driven right off the show floor. Though, he quickly followed that by saying the final calibrations, tuning, and software are still in development.

So what's changed from the car we were shown last year in Detroit?

We asked this very question to Jamal Hameedi, Ford Performance chief vehicle engineer. In a few words, not a ton has changed.

It's the small details that add up. The side view mirrors are now larger, and legal. There are reflectors on the front fenders, and the headlights have changed slightly. You'll never notice the changes to the headlights as the design itself is the same. The fans that sit below the mesh grilles in the scooped out hood are larger, and now actually function properly. The front splitter now has two air inlets in the center to help direct airflow, and the rear diffuser has been updated for better downforce at speed. The rear taillights look the same, but they are now street legal, and the housings no longer have GT etched into them. Lastly, the engine now sports a plastic cover that proudly reads "EcoBoost."

It's also worth noting that the carbon fiber splitter, side skirts, and rear diffuser are all glossy carbon fiber, while the car shown last year had matte carbon fiber. We were told that matte carbon fiber will be stock but this glossy look will be optional.

For those who might have forgotten, the new GT will be powered by a twin-turbocharged V-6 that will likely have about 630 horsepower and 539 pound-feet of torque. Power will be sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Enthusiasts are excited the GT is coming back, and it's no secret why given the legendary status of the GT40s of the 1960s and the reborn Ford GT of a decade ago.

Stay tuned for more updates as we near the GT's on-sale date later this year.

Weird thing is they have built the first customer cars but still haven't released power and performance figures etc, nothing except "in excess of 600hp".

Just like the original GT40...this car is more then what you'd expect from the same manufacturer of Rangers and Fiestas...

Considering it uses more fuel than the previous 5.4 supercharged gt, in a lighter car, what was the whole point of using a v6?

Although 650hp is bloody impressive.

Good question. You would have to assume a V8 would have had greater appeal and continue the GT legacy.

I suppose the use of the V6 is a rolling advertisement for their EcoBoost engine range?

The V6 is a proven race engine, suited to endurance racing. Its used in Daytona prototypes and had won evenets there.

Given the GT was going to Le Mans, V6 was a good start...

The racing versions of the V6 are remarkably similar to the street versions too...

Put it in simple terms. The TTV6 was the best engine Ford had to meet all the requirements...

The common response from Ford when questioned by the media is "packaging", it allows them to have the narrow rear between the buttresses.
My choice would be a supercharged Voodoo though.

The v6 does the job, I don't care it was an I4 Hybrid, as long as the car looks good and goes like stink then i am happy.
Well done Ford.

I'm a v8 bloke but with looks that good who cars if it even has a motor. Place it in the lounge room and stare at it for the rest of your life. I reckon I stood in front of the one at the New York international auto show for about an hour. The thing is art, it wouldn't be out of place in the met.

To meet the category requirements for a Le Mans assault. Pretty much the entire rationale of this car...

The ACO and IMSA haven't dictated a V6. IMSA previously had a 3.5L capacity limit for forced induction engines in the Daytona Prototypes, which made the engine a better fit than the previous Modular based 5.0 V8 which were allowed 5.5l for naturally aspirated engines.

This was just the easiest way to meet the performance targets IMO, which is probably more important for the road car than the race car. The latter is probably only running 500hp or so to prevent them running away from the naturally aspirated Porsches and Aston Martin's.

Official numbers are out...

638HP, 1385kg (dry weight) and 347kph top speed.

Ford is also claiming it will be quicker than the McLaren 675LT

Still wish they went with a blown V8 but there's no denying the car looks great from any angle !

Default Re: All-new Ford GT revealed.

Quote:

FORD GT drivers will have the benefit of five distinct drive modes, including a “V-Max’ setting for maximum straight line speed.

The V-Max mode is the fifth option after Normal, Wet, Sport and Track which adjust the GT’s aerodynamic, engine, chassis and transmission settings to suit the selected driving conditions.

It has the same low suspension tune as Track mode, but with all aero elements retracted to minimise drag and stability control activated to reach the GT’s 348km/h top speed.

The system was derived from Ford’s GT racing program but has been further developed to suit all conditions likely to face a car designed to potentially be both a daily driver and track-day terror.

Ford insists the drive modes, selected via a Porsche-style steering wheel dial, are more than just simple set-up tweaks and are designed to enable drivers to easily make the most its performance characteristics depending on the style of driving they desire.

In Normal mode the GT’s ground clearance is set to 120mm to comfortably clear speed humps, potholes or driveway inclines. Throttle and transmission calibrations are configured for standard driving, and traction and stability control systems cannot be adjusted.

The rear wing deploys automatically in Normal mode for better aerodynamic stability at 145 km/h, returning to its stowed position at 130 km/h. The wing still deploys as an airbrake if sensors detect aggressive braking.

Wet mode is similar to Normal mode but adjusts throttle sensitivity to help drivers manage the reduced grip offered by rain-affected surfaces for greater traction.

Normal and Wet modes also have a Comfort option to soften the car’s ride on bumpy roads by adjusting compression and rebound in the dampers.

Meanwhile Sport mode adjusts throttle settings to sharpen response from the GT’s 470kW twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine, also activating the anti-lag system that keeps the turbochargers spinning when the throttle isn’t open.

Stability and traction control settings become driver-adjustable using the AdvanceTrac system, allowing three additional settings. Slacker slip, yaw and oversteer parameters enable drivers to further explore the Ford GT’s handling and driving dynamics. Ground clearance remains 120 millimetres, and the Comfort option is deactivated.

Crave a more hardcore experience? Track mode is only recommended to use on smooth racetracks that allow for a lower ride height, and it puts the GT in the most focused posture possible. It can only be selected with the transmission in park and almost halves the ride height to a catseye-scraping 70mm. It also adjusts the suspension to its firmest setting.

The rear wing – complete with gurney flap – deploys permanently, and the aerodynamic openings in the front close for maximum downforce. All of this happens in less than two seconds.

In V-Max (maximum velocity) mode, every setting is tuned to make the Ford GT go as fast as possible. Ride height is 70mm as in Track mode to keep air from spilling under the car and generating lift, but all aero elements are stowed to minimise drag. Stability controls remain active to help ensure the car moves forward in a straight line.

The Ford GT also features an advanced, yet easy-to-use launch control system that provides optimal traction for the perfect launch every time. Designed for track use, it’s available in all modes except Wet.

The bad news? Us Australians will never get to sample the GT’s delights on these shores.
