I'm sure there are worthy replacements in the Ford range for the falcon and the RS Focus is a fab car but what I mean is that there is no talk about Fords on the Holden forum I look at, but there's plenty of talk about the future Commodore on the Ford forum!!!

Most of the commodore talk is negative. So cant see that as a positive thing for Holden. They have a big problem getting people to accept this abortion as a proper Commodore.

Maybe if there was a 4 cyl FWD Falcon coming from China there would be more talk about Ford, but there isn't so the subject is dead.
There is a lot of chatter about the 'new Commodore' on Holden Forums, none of it very complimentary to either the vehicle or the company.
My thoughts are that Holden are just about stuffed in 2018, but then most new car buyers just buy what looks like the best deal with no thought of where it is made or servicing.

Ford Australia was involved with the Chinese Taurus which looks like a luxury FG-X Fairlane. But it is front wheel drive and I guess they made the right choice to let Falcon rest with dignity.

That's not a bad looking car (in an old fashioned early 2000s way), and it is available with a V6. Why would Ford Aus not be after it ? Dowdy ????
Please don't point out that it is only in China and LHD ... apart from that ?

Well...bing LHD only presents a problem. If its not engineered for RHD from the get go, its more complex to undertake...and for a small market.

Its better to wait for the Mondeo to pick up the some falcon sales and become a stronger seller, rather then adding another new model to the range.

On a practical note, the V6 appears to be a maintenance nightmare.

If it is a tweaked version of the current V6 in a transverserse format, reving higher for extra power will stretch the timing chain even more.

Replacing the timing chain on an east west V6 looks to be a tough job.

Also being direct injection, it will be a fun job doing a 90,000klm valve clean when one cylinder bank is pressed up against the firewall.

I would only look at the 4 cylinder Turbo of this first imported Commodore ( if at all )

Are transverse/fwd-based AWD cars only able to split 50% or less of the torque rearward? Only except I've seen is Audi but they use a longitudinal engine..

Focus RS can send 70% to the rear and then split that between the 2 wheels where needed. I know the RS is a little different to the new commo but just replying to the AWD bit.

Previous OPC Insigna had a AWD system that gave bias to the rear...i believe that one of the OPC models actually shares the system found in the Focus.

Correct.

But on paper at least Kia have an orders of magnitude better car than Holden to sell.

Kia have just gone and pulled the rug out from under them. If HSV had any plans of bolting turbos onto the commo they have just been given the smackdown too.

The only car Holden have that will sell now is the Colorado.

Your call, I guess People will still buy cars based on Heritage & History, when in reality we're looking at newly imported vehicles with no connection to the past.
Personally I think Kia are delivering a good product these days, and the Stinger IMO has come along at just the right time to pick up Blue and Red traditionalists

There are a lot of different AWD systems and the orientation of the engine doesn't have anything to do with the available torque distribution/split. Focus is a good example of this.

The problem with FWD cars with AWD tacked on is the transversely mounted engine. Transverse engines need to mounted over the top of the front axle which does no favors for weight distribution, steering feel, or from an aesthetic perspective, the cars overall proportions.

A longitudinal mounted engine can be positioned behind the front axle, and lower in the car to boot. Everything is better from a performance/enthusiast perspective but there will be less room in the cabin, slightly higher fuel consumption, and more expense for the manufacturer in the current world of shared transverse platforms.

If I was in the market for a sporty large sedan/liftback in a few years the Kia would definitely get considered, the Commodore definitely would not.

I have always thought that the VF 2 from a design perspective is a good looking car. IMHO the Opel does not have a photogenic picture profile. When I view and compare the Opel replacement against pictures of the VF 2 I think the Opel can only be described as plain ugly.

At least Ford did one smart thing when they announced the demise of the Falcon they announced the arrival of the Mustang as a replacement brand hero car which I think helped soften the news for some (I am not one of these BTW). Not that I am a Mustang fan, however from a photogenic perspective I do recognize the car has a good looking performance profile and I think the healthy sale figures of the car since it was first as introduced into the Aussie market backs my view up.

Holden haven't announced a replacement hero car model (e.g. something with a V8 engine) and from a marketing and sales perspective I think that is a huge mistake.

Cheers, Brent

Nah I'm not a fan at all. Like most FWD cars of that size, it just looks flabby. Nothing sporting or menacing or athletic about it.

If they are smart they will change their name to 'Kia Special Vehicles'

...and about history - history & heritage are being made now, by Kia offering a RWD 4 door when GM and Ford abandon it, historic times...

Europe and America invented the car.
