Default Anyone been booked for this ?

Was sitting at the lights waiting to do a U-Turn. Police were on the opposite side waiting to do a right hand turn. Traffic cleared, I made my you turn, Police put on the "Angry" lights and booked me for doing a U-Turn without a sign saying so !! Is this common knowledge or have I been living under a rock ?

Common knowledge Buggerlugs.
Doing a U turn at traffic lights has always been illegal.
It's only in recent years that they have allowed it at some lights providing it is signed.

It's one of the things that always ****ed me off living in a city with high tourist numbers. Used to get very dangerous.

Yup. Been done for that myself.

Unfortunately no one was around (or so I thought) and a HWP car must of come in view of the intersection whilst I was mid U-Turn.

Saw him gun it after me, and I got done. Ah well, what can you do.

Making a U–turn at an intersection with traffic
lights

A driver must not make a U–turn at an intersection with
traffic lights unless there is a U-turn permitted sign at the
intersection.

No, I just looked it up. It's 2 points. Called in and asked the local copper ( who was actually at the station- Normally he's found at Subway) and he thought it was nothing, then come back with 2 points. So I just checked on line. Looks like I'll be getting another letter from the Government telling me I have bugger all points. Now LG , I don't have this problem when out the bush eh !!

One of the interesting road rule differences between states. What you did is perfectly legal in Victoria! Will now be careful of that one when driving up north!

i have a very similar story.

i got done about 15yrs ago here in adelaide. it was about 2am. i knew it was illegal but given the time, i took a chance. i thought i was the only car on the road, did a U-turn and pulled in to a servo. hopped out and there's a cop car pulling in behind me.

it was like - 'where did he come from??'

we both knew i'd done the wrong thing so it was a fairly short exchange.

i still have no idea where he came from.... i guess i was tired and the roads weren't as empty as i thought.

live and learn.

Yep, got done years ago while in Brisy as a young bloke visiting for Expo '88.
Got lost, so pulled a Uey and bing, police car behind me in a flash.
I explained the situation, and that I was from out of town (as my licence subsequently proved), and he said to go back & do another one as I was already heading the right way to get back home..... I got booked for the first, the second was a freebie!

This is news to me I thought you couldn't chuck them at specifically marked intersections with no u turn permitted indicated?

I'm pretty sure here in Vic you can do U-turns at intersections but just not at ones specifically signed not permitted.

This is the problem with people who got their licence by driving round the block with the local copper who plays on their old man's cricket team.

You can tell me about experience all you like, but without knowledge of the proper road rules, problems occur.

Not having a go at you in particular buggerlugs, just a general observation.

i'd say its just as much an issue with not having a national licencing and road rules system.

people learn to drive by the road rules applicable to their state mostly. ignorance isn't an excuse, i know, but why make things harder than they need to be? road rules do get revisited from time to time, and changes get made and its up to the individual to make sure they are up to date. sometimes these changes aren't that widely publicised to the greater population.

Technology is a wonderful thing. You can go online and find out any changed to the rules (you can in SA atleast, i'm sure all states have the same updates)

And for those older members, you can go into a Transport office and get a paper copy.

I have no sympathy for this type of thing. Its your responsibility to know the current road rules, not just drive blindly into the night. If you do not wish to learn the rules, then catch a bus

i hope you have the same attitude toward the speed zones etc.

like i said, i'm well aware ignorance is not an excuse.

It used to be a blanket no no in WA; it was only a few years ago that they introduced U turn allowed sign here.

The main risk is hitting pedestrians crossing at the lights on the green that of course have right of way; U turners are often so engrossed in watching the vehicle traffic they forget about the pedestrians (who in turn also are off guard as they don't expect a car to do a U turn).

It's a blanket no-no in NSW anyway.
Never seen a sign allowing a U-turn in my travels in NSW ... I remember seeing them when I have been up in QLD the odd time.

U-turns are permitted at some intersections (without traffic lights) ... unless there is a sign stating otherwise ... as I said ... that's NSW.

its my pet hate, always been a no no in nsw and i have nfi why so many think its ok to do it & then abuse me who's legally turning left on a green arrow.
And this new thing i am seeing more & more, people with a green light & right of way to go straight ahead, stopping & waiting for the oncoming traffic to turn right.
Are road rules not actually tested anymore?

not a go at you buggerlugs but have nearly lost the front of my car more times than i can remember in the last 3 years

So am I correct in deducing the following scenario -

If you are a P plater, you have to follow the restrictions (or lack thereof) as applicable in your HOME state, no matter which state you are driving in.

Then concurrently, you also have to follow any road rule peculiarities applicable in the state in which you are driving at any given time,
but not the P Plate road rule restrictions which may apply in that state, unless it's your HOME state, in which case you do?
