Actually, I did a bit of digging, and the description of the "Commodore" was given in 2016 on the Qld Police website https://mypolice.qld.gov.au/

Officers are seeking information in relation to the motor vehicle which was the same car determined to be of interest to police in 1972. The vehicle was described as a two-tone aqua and white HD or HR model Holden sedan (pictured).
I think we can blame the kid with the Degree in Journalism.

Bear in mind that not many journalists these days are older than 40, so for the bulk of them, a decent sized Holden sedan has always been a Commodore.

They think an AU is positively ancient!

A company I worked for used to get prototypes from Nissan, Holden and Ford, one of the Commodores they had was the first 'VB', the body number was VB000000, it was a German Opel set up to look like the 'new' Commodore, it did the rounds of promotions before we got it

The colour of the car in the picture does not look like Aqua.

Wasn't the HR and HD based on an Opel?

Both the Opels & the Holdens of the day were products of the GM Detroit design office. Bill Mitchell was the man in charge & Leo Pruneau also worked there.

It's not a coincidence that Holdens & Opels as well as some of the smaller Pontiacs & Chevs share many design similarities.
