Default WTAC 2017 Wrap Up

We had a great time at the World Time Attack Challenge 2017, with a big tent setup for people to get up close and personal with XForce products and our next-generation Smart Box.

MCA’s ‘Hammerhead’ S13 defended its title in the Pro class, despite the best efforts of Under Suzuki and his Scorch Racing S15, and Barton Mawer in his Porsche 968 breaking last year’s record. The MCA Hammerhead won it with a time of 1:20:9710, the fastest lap ever for a tin top around Sydney Motorsport Park. All cars were back with bigger, better, more badass aero, and we finally got to see the insanely massive RP 968 making clean runs all weekend.

In the Pro Am class, Robert Nguyen, a WTAC veteran, and his Mighty Mouse 1990 Honda CRX saw off international challengers from Canada and Finland to the class. The 101 Motorsport fettled Honda impressively set a time 2 seconds ahead of the 2nd placer, a Honda Civic built by Vibrant Performance and piloted by its owner William Au-Yeung. William is a seasoned time attacker in North America, breaking multiple records for his class across Canada and the US. A rivalry between Robert and Sami Sivonen, the third placed Finnish team fired up throughout the weekend, resulting in an impromptu roll race down the main straight! The Finnish team debuted their incredible Audi R8 1:1, making over 1300hp with just 1300kgs to push. Top it off with an impressive top speed of over 300kph down the main straight!

The Open Class had 24 entries, making it the 2nd biggest session for World Time Attack Challenge 2017. A variety of Japanese cars and a lone VW Golf R32 made up the numbers, but in the end, the only Honda stood at the top of the podium. A massive congratulations to JDMYard and their Honda Civic, piloted by Adam Casmiri. They saw off last year’s winner Nathan Morcom driving the Global Aircraft Services Evo 9, running nearly a second quicker than the competition. Matt Longhurst with the Integrated Motorsport Nissan R34 GTR took home third place, after coming really close to claiming 2nd spot themselves.

Competition in the Clubsprint Class was fierce, with less than 1 second separating 6th to 2nd place. However, Jordan Cox, the exciting teenage racing driver, was piloting the Team Raptor/IS Motor Racing Evo 9, and took home the Clubsprint podium with a blistering 1:36.839, over 2 seconds faster than 2nd placed Benny Tran, another WTAC veteran. Benny Tran and his Honda S2000 placed 2nd, just 0.2 seconds ahead of Ben Arnold in his Arnolds Fruit Market Nissan GTR.

In Honeywell Garrett Drift Challenge, local Beau Yates saw off internationally prominent drifters and drivers such as Daigo Saito, Shane Van Gisbergen and Mike Whiddett to claim first place. His Toyota 86 overcame the monster Lexus from Japan, going 4 runs before a victor was determined.
