Try shifting to the fresh air setting & turning of the air con when you are a few hundred metres from your destination. Might also be a good idea to spray some Glen 20 into the air return inlet (down under the centre console area) - whilst the ac is on & in recirc mode

Years ago I bought a product from Bursons called Clean Air Duct Freshener, which is a sanitising spray. Used it twice with a 100% success rate so far.

You spray it through the outside air inlet, through the recirculation air inlet, as well as into each vent via a tube and it does the trick.

Yep, clean out the ducts etc to kill the bacteria but also replace the cabin air filter (sometimes called pollen filter) to ensure the air coming in is cleaned. Easy DIY on some models the filter is easily accessible on others a bit more tricky. Plenty of video help on Utube.

I would also check that the aircon drain is not blocked or partly blocked

I had my '03 Mk I re-gassed recently but prior to that never had an issue with unusual smells. phantom xr6t, that's a wise bit of info. I actually have ppl come up to me and point out the pool of water underneath my engine bay and I tell 'em it's ok. So I know my aircon drain is working as it should.
