I haven't driven the Mach E so cant comment on which handles better. Telsas are very firm!

ICC looks alot more user friendly IMHO.

Build quality at Tesla has been lackluster!

For me personally, the number one factor is range. The Tesla might be bigger, might handle better (although that can be subjective), and might accelerate faster, but really if it doesn’t go as far then none of that matters. That extra poofteenth of a second you had on me at the lights will be wasted when you’ve gotta charge your car before I do.

But the Teslas have higher range?! More range from smaller battery packs from more efficient motors.

But they have more range and better performance than the Mach E.

They are firm given they focus on handling. The Mach E did poorly in the Elk/Moose test that the Tesla nailed.

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of the Mach E and if they were the same price, I'd buy one. But I'm not paying $10k premium extra for a lesser product.

I've got 2 new ones as you know. The build quality is fantastic compared to my US built ones. If anything, my Mustang build quality is poor compared to the Tesla. The Mach E will suffer from similar built quality.

And charge speeds. Mach E can do 109kw DC fast charging vs 180/250kw in the Tesla. You'll be stopped on a trip for less time.

Electric Cars are definitely the way of the future, and everybody should be buying and driving them!

Please hurry up, I'm getting old waiting for the price of V8s to come down

Don't think it's people trading V8's for EVs. It's people who were worried about fuel prices and were probably driving 4 cylinder cars.

V8 people (including myself) would keep the V8 as a weekender. Heck, having an EV makes it easier to keep the V8 not having to run them daily.

Tesla Model Y has 533km vs the Mach E’s 600km?

Ah yes, you're comparing marketing claim using the inaccurate WLTP rating. It's better than the NEDC before it but it's still garbage. Look at the much more accurate US range ratings (they removed NEDC and WLTP for being misleading).

The longest Range US EPA Range for the Mach E is 310 miles (499 kms) for the Premium RWD or 312 miles for the California Route 1 special. This vs 330 miles (531 kms) for the model Y. And every range test in the real world has seen the Tesla beat the Mach E for Range.

Since when was 500kms not a good range? You just plug the thing in...most ICE in urban settings would be getting 500-600kms.

They've been out for a couple of years now. The Mach E is not a new product globally.

It needed a recycle for Australia. I'm sorry but that is ugly.

What was once a slender purebred Muscle car has evolving into this.
Poor Lee Iacocca would be rolling in his grave.

I don't think the Mustang was ever slender. Even in Ford vs Ferrari, Miles gives a great character reference for Mustang (whether he actually said that or not).

They are big and bulky cars especially late 60's and early 70's. And the new ones weigh a LOT!

Muscle cars aren't slender. They're heavy and have an oversized engine shoehorned into the front.

Interestingly, with the low centre of gravity, the Mach E handles really well but there is no denying they're heavy and an SUV. It's a necessary evil for Ford to call it a Mustang.

Good shape no doubt. Don't like those wheels from the early days. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Mustang is thanks to fleet emissions. Only reason we have a V8 Mustang is thanks to the Mach E

No, you're killing the planet. Get rid of that V8 now, before its too late.

I need V8 demand to drop far enough for a Mustang to become affordable, but not so far that they stop importing the V8s.

Well, I called it and it seems Ford have listened in the US. If this happens in Australia too, it will be a game changer for the Mach E. Getting access to Teslas EV network can be make or break for the car.

If only putting an engine into a car added character. So much more to character than just the engine.

Anyway, this thread is about the Mach E... Not what you or i think contributes to character.

Is there an extent to which they are trading on the character of the Mustang in this?

I don't think so. But on the brand for sure. Let's be honest, if they called this an Escape, Kuga, Endura, Edge, etc, there would not be close to the discussion nor hype. As much as people hate on the fact it is an EV SUV using the Mustang name, it's been a runaway success for Ford.

In this case, a Rose by any other name would NOT smell as sweet

does anyone know how many Mach e's were ordered when books opened in Australia? Apparently sales are down in the US and Ford have reduced the price.

Hasn't the name simply got to do with keeping average economy of their models as low as possible?

Average economy of the "Mustang" looks impressive when the Mach E is included.
Not so without it...

Tesla are undercutting them big time. Sadly, they're $16k more than the equivalent Tesla Model Y here so I don't expect it to light up the charts. They screwed the pricing badly locally.

Mustang Mach E is good as it’s offsetting the mandated fuel economy requirements for manufacture in the USA.

“The new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for the USA demand an average fuel economy of 49 US MPG (4.8L/100km) across every manufacturer's passenger car and light truck fleets by 2026.”

Means the V8 can still be manufactured.
I’m happy for everyone to drive a Mach E while we still get a V8 Mustang.

The name doesn't matter as it's the average across the whole Ford range, not just the Mustang.

But the Mustang Mach E name was only chosen to piggy back off of a successful nameplate. They were worried a new name plate wouldn't have much popularity.
