Got this post from Gates the other day.
Does the motor vehicle industry want to stop vehicle owners from using Coolant in their cars and can only be accessed by a mechanic. WTF. Gates Webinar Series: Should the Coolant System be Kept Under Lock and Key? Tuesday, 12th of May 2020 at 12:00PM-1:00PM - Australia Eastern Standard Time (Sydney, GMT+10:00 Over time, coolant in the cooling system can break down resulting in the need to service the system. The protectants in many of today’s coolants become depleted and weak leading to corrosion, rust and scale. This can occur for a number of reasons such as mixing coolants, so should you keep the cooling system locked down from owners that may do something to cause this? Regards, Bondy |

They've already tied to do the same with auto trans. BTR with the 4 speed just removed the dipstick. Merc you have to buy a dipstick as a tool. ZF in BMWs you have to pump fill - from the bottom - they don't even have a side fill plug like falcons for the old 5spd ~1990 model ZFs
All of them were saying the same thing - problems due to owners mixing fluids or using the incorrect type. We all know this is a pile of crap along with "sealed for life" and "there's no reason to change the trans fluid so don't go looking at it". Sealing the system off (or just making maintenance more difficult) saw plenty of trans failures way too young/early that did not get contaminated or have the wrong fluid put in. The people manufacturers are worried about (complete dunces) don't even lift a bonnet these days. Things last longer if the clued in person can easily access the fluids. What's going to come first: a mechanics trade swipe card for the bonnet latch, or everyone going all electric so trans, oil, hose and coolant companies die off completely? LOL |
