safe transaction on interstate buy, site unseen

looking at buying an interstate car site unseen.
I have got shedloads of photos of the car and I am confident that I will be reasonably happy with it.
What I am after is some ideas on how to make the transaction as safe as possible for me so I don't get ripped off, price is only $2K.
The car will be transported on his end up to me

I guess if you are both working on trust,maybe the fairest way would be 1/2 money now and the other half on delivery.That way worst case is you only pay half if it doesn,t come up to expectations

Maybe put it out there if someone here is close to go have a look for you , perhaps assist in the deal.
Have found a lot of good standup guys here would likely help out.

No seller would agree to this for the reason you state, if the buyer isn’t happy you don’t get the other half of your money.

Want to ensure it meets expectations then go and physically look at the car, if you want to take the site unseen risk then you pay all upfront.

A seller can be genuine and describe the car as accurately as they possibly can, and a fussy buyer may still find issues to complain about and refuse to hand over the remaining money.

who is picking the car up? can they deliver a bank check once they have the rego papers or receipt or loaded on the truck
if you use a big name transport company they should be trusted enough to handle this

is the seller away on an oil refinery and wants you to pay with paypal?

I agree with Gregaust, ask any of your connections on AFF or ask if someone would be interested in having a good look over it for you just to be sure.

I know if I was selling a car to someone I've not meet, but have only communicated over the Net then I'd be concerned about the legitimacy especially if you started offering part payments etc. At least if someone showed up on the buyers behalf some of my concerns from a buyer's prospective would be laid to rest.

Only other thing to add would be, put yourself in their shoes and offer what you think you'd be willing to accept if you were selling.

What you propose to do is inherently risky.

Do you know a local who could hand over your cash and take the car?

Otherwise, you just have to satisfy yourself you are dealing with an honest person.

I had a similar situation a couple of years ago, not the same, but similar.

I'm in Perth, saw on-line a camper/caravan of exactly the model we wanted, and at a good price, problem is it was in Adelaide.
I thought I am not prepared to send over $20k to an unknown person and get him to put it on the train. And I doubted if he wanted to send it to me and get paid later! Plus it would probably be damaged, and cost $$$ to ship across. And that it looked great, but how old were the photos on-line, too big an amount to buy unseen.

My solution: Confirmed the purchase by email, including negotiating $1000 off to offset some of the cost for me to drive over (proud of that!). Agreed by email that I would immediately ETF a Holding Deposit of about $300, and that by "holding deposit" I meant that he did not sell it to anyone else until I had seen it, but if I did not purchase after inspectiion, then he kept the deposit, seller agreed to that. Main payment would be by bank cheque handed over at delivery at sellers residence (I got the bank cheque before we left home).

Nice 3 day drive to Adelaide, inspected camper - it was like new - handed over the bank cheque, exchanged rego documents, and took it home. Everyone happy.

I sold my 2012 R-Spec privately a year or so ago. I had a few callers from interstate but without exception they wanted to knock 1 or 2K off to pay for the car to go interstate.

Finally sold it to a guy from Orange. Sent him photos, details of rego and finance. He wanted to deposit full payment in my account but I suggested put small deposit $500 and come down with 2 bank cheques. If you don’t like the car no harm done. I was even prepared to refund the deposit.

He came the following weekend, took one look, and deal was done.

From a sellers perspective I’m not happy to sell sight unseen, I prefer buyer to look first.

I sold my XR6T sight unseen. The buyer organised an inspection at a local mechanic. Once it passed the inspection the car was to stay there until I gave the ok that I had received payment. The buyer then organised for transport after I gave the mechanic the all clear.

Bought my Tornado unseen, but had an AFF member who was local to the seller and had an xr6t ute look at it. Used Prix transport. They not only picked up the vehicle and provided a comprehensive check prior to putting it on the truck in QLD, but again at the depot in Adelaide with me for just over $900 insured. With the potential for so much risk it was actually the best car purchase experience ive had.

My first thought was an escrow service might be in order, hardly worth it for a couple of grand original price.
I sent pics of my ID and he sent all his ID, I spoke to him on the phone a few times and I had 2 mates down there to make sure the deal was good in the end.
The end purchase price was nearly half what the seller asked for. I am happy with the result so far, it's on a truck somewhere on the way up here. I paid for the transport.

went with Pricks Transport, which is owned by Toll from Adelaide to central QLD

i'll tell you my brothers turn of event trying to buy a genuine RX4 coupe from QLD
1. found it on RX4 fenatics (was being sold by the moderator of the facebook page)
2. send a mate to go look at it and pay a $500 deposit
3. book a trailer, hire car, 1 way flight, accomodation
4. fly up and go look at the car and can't find a chassis number (owner said its under the bog from smoothing the engine bay)
5. try an back out of the deal unless he grinds off the bog to reveal chassis number
6. owner then says actually its a 929 and he removed the chassis number and put an RX4 id plate on it but he will supply the 929 plates
7. ask for deposit back
8. sorry wife spent it already
9. go to police, they say no harm you didn't buy it so there is no crime
10. then we try an tell everyone on RX4 fenatics and get blocked

end of story and lots of lost money from flights and hires but lesson learnt

yeah, I would never buy site unseen, especially if there was decent money involved.
I entertained it and got stacks of pics in the problem spots on the car, she won't win any beauty contests but that's just what I was after.
