"Creating a new political headache for the Howard Government over the car industry's future just months from the federal election.

The decision by Ford to stop manufacturing six-cylinder Falcon engines at its Geelong factory in Victoria by 2010 and shift to imports will cost 600 jobs. The Australian understands a further 600 jobs could be at stake at the company's Victorian Broadmeadows plant as Ford seeks to contract out part of its assembly and fleet maintenance work as well.

Ford's move, after many millions of dollars of Howard government grants, raises questions about the long-term economic future for Australia's car industry, with consumers shifting to smaller, imported cars in the face of rising petrol prices.
The company, however, is expected to argue today that its big impediment is the massive start-up investment that would have been needed in Australia to produce thousands of low-emission engines for the next-generation Fords."

"Former mechanic Jim Mock spent 16 years running a successful Ford dealership in Mildura, in northwest Victoria, before opening up his own workshop, which specialises in developing new parts for late-model Ford Falcons. Agreed, and now our Falcons will sound very much like a commodore once you chuck a 2.5" catback exhaust on it. :(

I read this too, it couldn't be a bigger disappointment - we will end up with a Taurus after all. The last XR6 turbos will be a real collector's item for enthusiasts of all-Australian cars - it will probably be the last one.

yeah Braden :( , if that happens then i don't know what i'd do and where would the FORD vs HOLDEN battle end up after that, i spose we still do have the v8 :P

Check out this thread - http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthr...2&page=4&pp=25. There are some very good points in there about the long term viability of FoA and it's need to stay competitive on a global scale. I stilll think it sux though. I won't be getting rid of my I6 EL any time soon.

Ford have lost the plot. I mean they spent so much developing the DOHC I6 that is brilliant not to mention the EA - AU motors too sure the early ones were a bit dicey with a few things but the potential and the reliability has been amazing... Who can't say that a aussie car like a falcon can last over 500 000Km's cos i have not seen a 3.8L holden last that long but there is a heap of e series out there that have and still going strong...

All i can see it gutless fords now a ****y little V6 in a AWD Territory will be a slug the 4L with a crazy stroke will be so much better IMO...

i can only speak from experience when it comes to the V6 versus I6, just sold my VX Commodore, with 180,000kms on the clock, and bought an EF Falcon, with 250,000kms on the clock,

this isnt the first time ive had a ford I6, ive had a EA with the dodgy 3.9MPI and an EL Ghia with the tickford I6

the EA was in a league of its own when it comes to POS status so we will leave this one out of it, the EL was a good car, but when it hit 260,000kms everything went down hill, largley to do with the fact that it had not been taken care of its whole life,

but the EF i own now, is in fantastic condition, depite the kays on it, and it is alot nicer to drive than the VX, the Falcon is quieter, more powerful, more fuel efficiant, and just generally a better car, which cannot be said to often when your talking about 6 years difference in age, and 70,00kms difference on the clock,

i beleive in my experience, the I6 is the best standard factory motor in any australian built car, ever produced

having said that no real judgement can be made until the "new" Ford V6 is introduced, we all may end up eating our words, and think the new engine is the best thing since henry ford himself, but one thing is for certain, if it ends up being the same as the Ecotec, then i may as well go out and by a Kia, because the quality not that much different
