I honestly think reputation, but also its a very competitive market, and a few competitors have more powerful and economical versions, i rekon Ford should have spiked the power a bit.

They shouldn't have called it Mondeo, it's a completely different car to the one that failed here in the 90's - yet to an extent the stigma remains.

the last time i remember seeing it on TV, in any form, was in casino royale, before the car was even released.

very, VERY poor marketing.

i honestly sometimes wonder if ford (not the dealer, ford itself) actually want to sell cars, with the lack of timely marketing and light in general they shed on their own product. It's a great product, that most people don't appreciate, because no one tells them.

Simply its the straight out bad reputation of the Mondeo name, very similar situation to the Mitsubishi Magna name.
Using the Mondeo name was just very poor marketing by suit wearing fools.

Where does it fit?
Fiesta is the small car, Focus is the midsize car now and the Falcon is the big car. The Mondeo is what?
Also, It sells for about the same price as a top of the range focus or a base model Falcon.
The Modeo has no market position. It doesn't fill any gaps in Ford's range.

It can't help that you have to but them at Ford Dealerships either, I've never found that to be a pleasant experience (unlike buying my wifes current Mazda).

The talk about a bad name is just crap!!! A few 1000 cars sold 2 decades ago has no bearing now. Get over this one people..

In my opinion, it does not sell because of a crap interior.. I considered an XR5T Mondeo in Dec09 vs a Falcon XR6T. I took one look through the window & saw that interior & it was off the list straight away. I did not want any more information about the car, it was out of the running straight away!!. People say the Commodore has a bad interior, but get me a Commodore interior over the current Mondeo any day.

Just my opinion!!

I'd have to agree with you there. The other reason is that it is just too expensive for a mid-size car under the "Ford banner". $45k+ for the XR5T? You can get an XR6T for that money.

Ford need to try harder to define where the vehicle sits in the Ford family. They do try by advertising the voice control (with the dog ad) and other techo features, but it doesn't look like they are succeeding.

This is probably another area where it is lacking. Not enough power, and not economical enough.

Interesting.
In the past month I have had several hire cars - each the most current model - including:
Commodore
XR6 Falcon
Corolla
i30

I still much prefer the Mondeo interior and mine is an MA. I love the look of the new MB.

All depends what you are looking for in a car.

Oh trust me it does, I often ask friends and family members about Mondeo's and they are skeptical to buy one because they often say "oh that car that came to Australia and had really bad reliability problems or something"

Another example is the Corolla, it's reputation as a solid car to get you from A to B is exactly the reason everyone buys one.

Reputation and bad naming is crap, and people shouldnt base future models on it, but they do.

Obviously you are not wise enough too know reputation is fundamental in the motor industry.

Your obviously not all that wise ether. If reputation is the fundamental how do you account for all Commodore sales from VP to VZ. Widley known for there tyre wear and still sold truck loads. Or how about The first Turbo D Hilux that would blow up within 50000ks and still sold truck loads & have customers willing to wait over 3mths to get one.

What is the reason the Holden Cruz is doing so well. Next time you talk to somone who owns one ask them where its built. They'll 9 times out of 10 tell you its a euro. Why do they all think that? GOOOD MARKETING.

The Mondeo was here for over 6mths before it was advertised anywhere but on SBS & in glossy mags. The TV ad we do get for it tell us your dog can talk to it.

Its never been marketed as the great car it is and thats why its sits in car yards and not front yards.

I agree with the OP. It's a seriously good car. The only negatives about thems I'd say is the pricing isn't super sharp and the engines are a little off the pace. The ecoboost 2.0 and new diesel should help the engineering side a little at least. There's no valid reason other than "reputation" or ignorance why there shouldn't be more Mondeos sold than Camrys.

Anyone who hasn't driven a MA or MB Mondeo is missing out.
I think there are several reasons why Mondeo has been a slow seller.

Yes, partly because of the poor reputation of previous models many years ago.

Also Ford have not marketed it very well at all, for fear of taking sales away from Falcon based products and thirdly, Ford dealers/sales persons don't really know anything about the cars or how to sell them to the public, they really only know how to sell Territory's and Falcons which have higher gross margins. (There was also a supply problem earlier on, when the MA was first released in Oz)

I drive Falcons, Territories, Camrys, Aurions & Commodores every day and it's always a pleasure to drive home in my Mondeo.

When the diesel wagon comes out soon here ion Oz, and if Ford market the product better, sales will do well...

Its all about a models reputation
Falcon= Aussie icon.
Mondeo= twice failed euro hack. (I'm not saying I agree with it)

Mondeo marketing hasn't established a 'slot' for it.

It's a Ford - but Euro. Looks smallish - but has more interior space than the Falcon. Great highway car. Economical too - but not as good as small cars.

It's ill-defined. But it's also bloody good!

Jeremy Clarkson raved over it - equated it to an Audi - at a fraction of the price.

Believe it or not Holden has a good reputation going back to the 60's-70's, as for your theory about tyre wear I have had 4 commodores in that Vp Vz range not one of them had tyre wear problems. Hilux yet again another prime example of people opening their wallets on previous Toyota / hilux reputation as a tough reliable vehicle. As for the holden cruz it,s price driven sales, and only time will tell what it will be remembered as.

My sister being a non car person asked me to come and look at cars in her price range and requirements last december. First car i said to go look at was a mondeo wagon which she liked, thought it was nice inside and out. It drove ok. She has been driving a honda crv for five years. Then we went to vw which was a big step up in fit and finish but so were the $$$$. Lastly we stopped at mazda and they had a diesel wagon there. Drove it and loved it to bits, did a deal there and then. I think it was around 38k with some extras.

She has had it 3mths now and is very happy with it. It is her first diesel which she would never had looked at if i hadn't pushed her. As 4vman said there is a big gap between the two.

Yep, unfortunately the mondeo is the ugly girl at the disco, she might have a great personality and be a lovely person but the stunner will get all the attention...

I love the car no doubt but gee 96Kw for a turbo diesel [ I think its 103Kw now ]! I have emailed Ford and told them no 2.2L then this is my last Mondeo the replied I got was "We are looking at options for the next upgrade" even the new Ecoboost diesel will be fine

apstar

ps I am seeing more Mondeos on the road compared when I got mine

When I bought mine (XR5) I compared:
Subaru Liberty Turbo
Subaru Liberty 3.0L
Mazda 6 MPS

The XR5 won hands down on:
Price
Value for money
Standard Features
Handling and driveability (the MPS was a pig of a car)

Yes it was 20kilowatts lighter than the other three but the torque was amazing.

And this was a person who was a tried and true Subi fan and said I would never drive a Ford.

So if people do try it, they will be surprised.

I never said that.. What I am saying is that Mendeo has NEVER sold well enough to have built up such a bad name.. Escpcailly when it was last on sale 2 decedes ago!! The first time I even knew the 80's Mondeo had problems was when I first found this website a few years back.. In fact, I dont know anyone that even owned a Mondeo let alone had something bad to say!! This line of thinking is over played in my opinion. Im my opinion the Mendeo is trying to built a reputation from nothing, not get over from an old one..

i couldn't be bothered to read all the replies here so sorry if i repeat stuff others have said.

i don't really agree with the reputation angle. nobody i spoke to about my purchase of a mondeo said anything about the previous models to me at all. i think it all comes down to ford australia not pushing the car in the market place. only ad you see for mondeo is the one with the german shepheard and that doesn't get much of a run anymore. also, it's sold as a mid size but is really more of a large car. problem is in that catagory it becomes a competitor for falcon, an aussie icon. also falcon is RWD v mondeo FWD and has a 6pot v mondeo 4 pot (other than XR5). imho, if ford pushed mondeo to the fleet market, sales would increase markedly.

privately, i'd challenge anyone who takes a mondeo XR5 or titanium deisel to do anything other than fall in love with it...

drove an XR5 and then Mazda 6 (diesel) 10 mins later.
My vote goes to the XR5 (instruments aside).

Just 'felt' more luxurious inside, rode better, steered better, similar on-road $$$, better equipment list. Unfortunately, one Ford salesman had to check the brochure when we were discussing colours.
