A phased replacement program would make sense over 20-25 years, giving the industry time to increase range, clean up the batteries (both manufacture and disposal), and most importantly, let economies of scale bring the price down of EV's to equivalent IC cars.

well I'd buy an EV in a heartbeat if they were more competitively priced. Range is perfectly adequate for 95% of my driving including my daily commute and I would upgrade my solar with a battery to charge overnight.

When I lived in the city i could only park on the street in the last place I lived. No way to charge.
Prior to that there were 3 carports for 8 flats. Who gets the charger?

Now I live in the outback and I suppose I could run a cable out to the car, assuming it will plug into the wall and doesn't require a dedicated charger.

But I also could never go anywhere other than around town or to and from work. Only a tesla has the range (barely) to get me to the next down and back, which I do a few times a month.
Where am I going to get a quarter of a mil to spend on a car?

Better get used to them guys. Look at the PHEV sales almost doubling each year for the last 3. Small steps will see these on the roads as time goes by. There is the renault zoe released this year with up to 400klm range. At a price of about 42k thats not too bad. And even better is workplaces are starting to instal chargers for their employees to use, so thats a win for the employee getting free charging of their car. Also look at some of teslas marketing, where they say free charging for the life of the vehicle ownership. So compare that price against a similar sized benz or bmw it starts to look pretty good. I guess im a bit biased as i drive a EV alot. I get free parking and charging when i go to town. I get free charging when i park at the airport. Lotsa shops have free charging as well. It all kind of puts things into perspective really. As time moves ahead more cars will be around, and those perks will not always be there! But i agree we wont see significant figures on the roads till 2030.

You wouldn't be able to afford a battery big enough to charge an ev overnight totally inefficient using a battery to charge a battery. Io upgrade your solar and buy a battery would cost 15 to 20 thousand dollars plus the 50 k for an electric vehicle for what a 20 dollar saving on petrol a day. only my opinion.

The Greens are too out of touch with reality.
We all know fossil fuels will not be around for too much longer, we can see it with all the car manufacturers releasing some sort of Hybrid or full EV.
However even they are phasing it in knowing well that is the only way to transition from dead animals fueling cars.

I have no qualms about electric cars (though I still love the sound of a fuel burning car) but I do have an issue with the way agendas are being forced upon people of late. So many things being banned.

There are 20 houses in my little street , the mains feed can handle power need and two possibly three cars charging , obviously the infrastructure to power these cars wont exist outside a test situation for decades so wont happen in my lifetime

In Victoria and Sth Aust. there is hardly enough power to power existing Homes & Factories.
So where is the extra power going to come from ?? Like my Dad said to me , Electric Lawnmowers get their power from yourlawn ! (Yallorn) . Be really green if it wasn't full of fertilizer and weed.
If they really want this to happen they will need to build some Green power stations - like the first comment- nuclear ones.
There is a deep pit down Morwell way not doing anything. Could build one at the bottom, only less than 1klm to hookup to the existing lines. Very, very unlikely to be any problems but if there was just let the Morwell river in to cool it down or flood the pit.
Some additional green power sources are in the pipeline- Solar paint being developed -this may extend range etc.
But what is needed is forethought and planning using many of the currently available resources including LPG.

Where do you think ethanol comes from it comes from sugarcane hardly a pollution free process you still need diesel to grow process and transport it. The only thing producing ethanol does is line the pockets of large corporations.
