Thumbs up Dohc

I will be watching this thread with interest. What bonnet mods did you do? Was it an XR bonnet or standard?

Wouldnt it be great,a stock looking Au with the hub caps and all and a blown BA engine under the bonnet.

So that means I could have used a BA EGAS engine instead of getting myself another AU EGAS engine ... bugger.

How much would a conversion kit like this cost FTG? Would there be many issues with insuring it? And after doing it does it feel like it is actually worth doing? Does it make the AU feel more alive with the extra 28ish kw's?

I have thought about this over and over but always decide against it. This thread might just inspire myself and others to get off our bums and have a go e ..

motor is in and running, but we have run out of time at the moment
lots of good wrecks have been coming in and we are flat out on other things,
we know now it can be done!!!!!!

we will get back to this project soonish but if anyones interested in the conversion i would be more than happy to discuss what mods we made to get this sucker in . i will list a basic summary here

sump is std BA
wiring loom on engine is AU
top on inlet manifold & throttle body is AU
AU crank angle sensor wiring will plug onto BA C.A.S
BA power steering hose requires a bend down the rack end then it will fit on
AU a/c compressor can be mounted onto BA compressor mount but needs to be spaced forward slightly so the belt lines up. this can be done with some 25mm angle iron and some new bolts.
AU water pipes can be fitted to BA motor with small mods
AU coil pack and leeds
AU engine mounts
AU alternator
AU knock sensor can be fitted to BA block
AU oil & temp sensors can be fitted
BA air intake
AU accel cable needs a bracket for mounting
AU exhaust fits up to BA manifold
AU injectors
fuel lines will plug straight on
i would suggest an edit for the AU ecu , at this stage we cannot get the engine to run smooth at low revs. (but we needed more time really!!)

i hope this help with anyone wanting to put one of these motors into a AU or earlier ford

Id say it would it would. A AU I6 NA with bolts ons extactors/cat - exhaust CAI edit custom tune & 4.11's say putting out 150rwkw should run say 14.2 to 14.5 BA with same set (lets say 180rwks) probally about same time (reason the extra fat) put that BA 180 rwkw set up in an AU have you got a 14.0-14.2 AU (BA powered)? :king:

Very intertresting. Good effort to get this up & running.

Do you need to put heavier spring in the front to cope with the extra weight from the BA motor?

i'd be doubting there would be a HUGE weight difference between the two engines...but then again I havent lifted the head of a BA/BF variant

WHat would it cost to get a BA xr8 engine fitted ?

Would the rest of the AU car be able to handle to power output from the new engine ? Diff, springs, etc

lots and lots and lots... The Boss engine would need new engine mounts, BA transmission?...just to start thing off...
the fact that the I6 BA engine is feasable is because it uses the same engine mounts.
on top of which you would almost cretianly need a new bonnet as even the aftermarket vaients with the bulge in teh AU bonnet i doubt would have the clearnace.

The BA engine won't make anywhere near standard power with no VCT and good luck getting it to idle. As soon as there is oil pressure the pin in the phasers will release and there is no way to control them. You'd need to lock the phasers at 0 degrees and get some cams reground for non VCT or make up some vernier gears. The BA coils can be wired to work similar to AU coilpack easily enough.
Good to know it pretty much bolts straight in though.

it would probably be cheaper to do an XR6T engine transplant + edit (IF ITS POSSIBLE AT ALL) than to make similar power with a turbo'd AU motor.

I thought the au and ba were pretty much the same chassis/engine bay.

Using Vernier gears and disconnecting the VCT wouldnt be that difficult o expensive would it?

Nope, it could probably be done using parts of the phasers.
The oil holes in the end of the cam would need to be sealed properly though.
Also the BA cam position sensor could be used with AU comp, you'd just need
to break 3 of the teeth off the trigger wheel.

This thread is great reading.

So far I would summarise as follows:

1. BA engines with many mods fits AU bay.
2. There are many issues to be sorted before the engine works well enough to justify the expense and effort.

I do acknowledge though, that this setup could work out really well down the track. This project is still in its infancy.

correct, we have still got to play with the cam timing , it does idle but has a bit of a flat spot on accelaration.
correct with taking 3 of the teeth of the cam trigger but still to work out what ones

With the engine on TDC one tooth will be on the sensor.
The trigger wheel has 3 teeth on one side and 1 on the other, it should be the center one on the side with 3 teeth that you'd need to leave if that makes sense.

whats the chances of getting the ba ecu to just control the engine and let the AU ecu do everything else?

It can be done with the edit according to capa but finding a tuner to transplant the ECU and the required wiring is a bit difficult.

This is the way I want to go as I would like to get the VCT working on my EA. Im yet to confirm it can definately be done and how much it would cost to have done.
