Pinto 2lt was a belt-driven single OHC (one of the first). Can pick up a decent used one off ebay for around $200
The cosworth YB engine was based on the pinto block and had a turbo charged twin cam head. The heads alone go for $1500+ (needing rebuild). Awesome motor but you will required bottomless pockets to maintain one. A head gasket will cost you more the a complete pinto engine.

yeah i know. I was thinking of buying one and rebuilding. I hear they have a common problem of over heating. Is it possible to grab the head and slap it on a pinto sohc engine?

It is possible to use the older pinto bottom end, but most people go for the 4x4 Sierra block. I'm not 100% up with the ins and out of YB Cossies but I know a few people who have invested a fews arms and legs into them. Personally, I think they are getting a bit long in the tooth. Some of the jap engines are more cost effective and Cosworth are getting behind the new Duratec (Mazda/Ford) engine, so expect big power out of those units in the future....Then again, for street cred, you just can't beat a YB under the bonnet.

Very interesting. Yeah i think i might stick to the same blood lines. I really want my Eski to be as original as possible. I'm buying new suspension this week but i'm finding it really hard to find the new twin cam head. But im not going to stop looking. If you guys hear anything i'd really like it if you could drop me a note. I'll start posting some pics when i really start doing things.

Cheers Guys

To put a cosworth in an escort you will be looking at some BIG $$$. As said already a head goes for about $1800 but then you have to rebuild it. A complete turbo engine sold about 5 months ago for $11,000 although it had all new parts. So to get a cosworth into a escort including a engine I reckon you will be looking at about $20 000.

A SR20 is a much better option. You can get a complete front cut for about $2000 so you will get all the parts you need including gear box. I reckon for a sr20 about $10 000.

I also wouldn't go buying new standard replacement suspension parts if you are doing a twin cam conversion (cosworth or SR20). You will have to change some of your suspension parts to be able to cope with the extra horsepower.

Just my thoughts anyway!

Yeah? , yeah i was looking at getting new front struts from Koni and new rears from pedders. But the new head for 1800 rebuilt i could still put that on my block, correct? I dont think that would cost 10,000 would it?

Yeah you can use a cosworth on a pinto bottom end. AFAIK, pistons need valve reliefs and the pulleys need to be changed sierra cosworth type ones. I'm not an expert though as I've never put a head on a pinto block. A head will cost you about $1800 plus possibly a rebuild. I know of one for sale atm for $1800 but unsure weather it will need a rebuild.

Is it originally a 1.6 or 2.0? Do you have a 205 block? Are you going to run turbo? EFI? Have you got a 5 speed? Theses are a few questions you need to know before going ahead.

Yeah its a 2.0l and im putting a 5 speed on it. Im keeping it Carbi and super charging it. Im going to rebuild the bottom end of my pinto to allow for the 2.0DOHC head. It's a slow process but it will be worth it in the end.

Oh Ok. Is the car originally a 1.6 or 2.0? Do you have a 205 2.0l block? All cosworths came out turbo and injected. I a seirra 5 speed wont be able to handle the added power. You will have to get either a T5 (good luck finding one probably $1500 - $1800) or mod a celica or supra box. Either will need tunnel mods. Will need to get rid of the brake booster and crap and run a bias pedal box. Will need to change your diff. I'm not trying to put you off but there is alot more to it then just the engine. Have a search on this forum.

I bought a 2 litre short motor off a mate of mine in '97, and . He bought it with the twin cam head conversion, complete, and supposedly running. The twin cam head does fit, but as mentioned above, it is not a cheap exercise.

It had the pistons fly cut to clear the valves, and was balanced and blueprinted. When he installed it in his escort, he ran into a couple of issues. Head bolts for the twin cam head are a throw away item once used. The engine builder had reused the old ones, and it created some issues. Also, the extractors (custom ones required) needed the reshaping of the brake booster bracket, as well as the battery tray was relocated to the boot to make room for the webbers. He kept on running into issues with it and ended up separating the parts and moving onto another project.

It might work out a little cheaper to look for a zetec engine, the conversion is ample over in the uk and 50% still use carby set up. If you search the net there is plenty on the conversion and there is a place in the uk that makes all the parts you need to modify making it simple, its called retro ford i think. I look heavily into it for my mk2 esky but when my sierra got defected my plans changed.

Default Go the YB!

Hi guys, if you are serious about a YB I have had both N/A and now turbo. Send email and I can pass on what I know (if anything).
In summary stock motor (ie they are bullet proof from the factory) with decent ancillaries 242kW atw and it is ludicrous in mk2 Escort.

ok if your investing in a cossie let me know how you go. Seriously these are jigh profile engines. Parts and pieces are worth more than normal engines. My old man used to rally a MkII escort with a cossie, and a Cosworth Sierra in the UK. Lovely engines, beautiful notes but deffinately not worth the trouble. Buy a copy of the latest REDLINE magazine. itr has a write up on the YB cossie. Issue #116. Like i said its the latest one out. says a stage 7, 650+ BHP will cost you around 27,000 pounds. Something like AU$80,000. happy hunting.

Definitely worth the effort!
Build it right and just add oil maybe even water and change the filters.
Thanks to Autronic and 4x MSD coils, Bosch injectors, custom loom.....All of the electronics running the engine ensure reliability. We know the mechanicals are bulletproof; all the operator needs to do is warm it up and tune it correctly. :
So much fun!

(And yes I have had one go bang.....and still have positive things to say...That could be madness??!!??)
