you can access the adjustment without taking the disc off
to tighten you turn clockwise- but because of where the access 'window' is, you have to turn it differently on each side,
the hole to access adjustment has rubber grommet over it

the adjusting wheel has lumpy bits (like castellations)
you push the wheel with a screw driver- either levering toward you or pushing away - as wheel is perpendicular to disc (horizontal)
get a torch and try to see what is going on it there..

im not sure but i think i jacked both rear wheels off the ground, put vehicle in neutral, handbrake off, turn one of the adjustment screws a bit / then test- you want the brake to come on by 4th click apparently

btw - im definitely not a mechanic (any only tried this on AU wagon - disc brakes no IRS)

if you dont get any joy you can take disc off then you will see what is going on...........

clockwise to tighten - if you imagine the adjusting wheel from above - see old post .......
"-left/ drivers side, tighten by levering toward yourself
- right side, tighten by pushing away"

I adjusted the handbrake cable inside the ute today and it only just holds the vehicle so tomorrow I'm gonna adjust it by removing the rear wheels. Hoping I can get a screwdriver in the inspection hole and adjust it like that. If not I'll remove the discs and adjust it that way.so it's clockwise for both left and right sides?

hi revcore,
Im actually wondering if the clockwise thing is true
I remember adjusting on left and right side is different

put handbrake on 2 clicks- then make adjustment

i would try levering wheel toward you drivers side

pushing wheel away from yourself passenger side

if handbrake is on it should tighten up quicker

get a torch to have a look through hole

cheers

I have tried 2x attempts adjusting the handbrake on my AU XR8 and it's still the same as before

here is a shot how the handbrake leaver is, is this too high ??
and another thing it doesn't hold in any gear besides Park ??

cheers Dean

blu is yours a ute /wagon or sedan?

not sure if they are different but wagon doesnt have irs,
handbrake is like a drum brake inside a disc brake

so maybe take the disc off, check lining on handbrake
check spring etc,
clean it out

there is a picture below shows it inside

ps you want to keep adjusting until you cant turn disc around, then make sure it moves smooth when handbrake off (might have to back off adjustment)

good luck,

btw im not a mechanic so take with grain of salt.
cheers

Yeah the hole does not line up well, you cant really see the adjustment wheel. But if you use a bent small screwdriver you can do it by feel - not easy.
I took off rotor, and worked out (by putting rotor back in reverse) where to drill a hole for adjustment with the rotor on.
It is not hard to drill a 10mm hole in the rotor (in area clear of holes) using a good quality high speed steel drill. Go 14mm if you have one.

Dean it only holds in park as the handbrake is not doing anything, it's the park lock pin working.

The only AU out of my four that has a handbrake that works well is the ute. The wagon one specially is useless. One day i'll give this a go.

An oldie but a goodie - thanks Whoosha. Just used the original post to adjust mine. Shame the adjusters go different directions to tighten on each side. Easy on the passenger side but more difficult on the driver's side. Great handbrake now

Cheers Adrian
