What about Mazda ?

In the 70s, there was the Mazda Roadpacer, which was a Holden Premier with a Mazda Rotary donk fitted. Then later on there were a multitude of Ford/Mazda offerings.

The maverick only ever came out with a carburetor on the 4.2L petrol.
Where as the nissan came out with efi.
This seemed to have solved "some" of the fuel consumption issues.

Im on my 2nd GQ 1st one was an early carby model (same as maverick) which was just a base model ST.
I upgraded to a later model GQ Ti with all the options was a very low km 1 owner.
Definitely wont be selling in a hurry. Great 4x4.

Thanks for all the responses. I knew they were Ford in name only, but the few examples I have seen for sale were reasonable and pretty clean. Times change and sometimes vehicles change or cease production, and from the vehicles we have here in the US I thought it might be a neat niche vehicle around here.

Something possibly forgotten over time was there were around 12 Peter Brock-modified Mavericks produced in the early 1990's.

I Have a Patrol,or Maverick depending on how you look at it lol, but yeah they're all Nissans really, mines a 94 model, TD42t, did a big trip in it yesterday and did close to 600ks, and still has some fuel left, which i thinks pretty good for a 23 year old Vehicle with 337,000ks on the clock

Reputation aside it's still one of the only real 4x4s left.

I'd happily drive my Wrangler across Australia and not be concerned about reliability issues. With the reliable 2.8 VM Motori diesel and bulletproof Chrysler 545rfe box.

There's no current Ford available I'd trust the reliability of over my Wrangler.

Ah, the heady days of badge engineering...
There was actually method to your madness if you bought a Nissan "Ute"...a rebadged XF Falcon...because if you bought it as a Ford, you only got the 12 month/24,000km warranty. BUT if you bought the exact same car badged as a Nissan, you got Nissans standard 24 month/48,000 warranty.

Of course it worked in reverse as well...but a Nissan Patrol and you got 24/48 warranty...but the exact same thing badged as a Ford Maverick and you only got the Ford warranty of 12/24...

Not in this one that was on the Grand Tour.
It's a highly modified GTR with a Patrol shell literally.

Yeah, but in those days GM owned a controlling interest in Isuzu, in much the same way that Ford used to own a controlling interest in Mazda.

I had the diesel as a company car when I worked in the mines and it was so gutless it was dangerous.
You had to have at least 3 kilometres of clear road ahead if you wanted pass anything.
Rode pretty rough on the highway too

Good friend of mine bought his Nissan new in 1998 - 4.2 diesel 5speed manual. used it as his everyday transport towed his extremely large caravan all over Australia. Last year decided to update and brought a new Ranger XLT auto to get around in and tow his caravan. Still has the Nissan and prefers to use it rather than the Ranger. The Nissan has 520,000k's up and all he has ever done to it is replace the front brake pads once and it's had one wheel alignment. Still on the original clutch, and only ever been serviced when it was supposed to be. He looks after his cars and it still looks new. Will the Ranger be as reliable? I doubt it.

You would have found if you took your left foot off the brake whilst pushing the accelerator with the right foot it would have performed much better, or even releasing the park brake before driving makes passing easier

Agreed. We turbo'd our 4.2 which made it heaps better.

They don't make cars like they used to. The Japs really had it going on in the early 90s. I'd put my money on a early to mid 90s Jap 4 x 4, rather than a post 2000s or 2010s Thai Hilux or Ranger, any day of the week.

Not even remotely funny.
These 4WD's were gutless and no driving technique could improve them.
However, they did achieve very good fuel economy, probably because they were hardly burning any up.

They seem pretty rough and tumble considering ive seen people smash about in these without miraculously shearing major suspension parts. But id say things would often be replaced because with that kind of driving. Slow rattly and pumps out more soot than a volcano. Commonly found destroying local tracks and tailgating people because owners think they are king dick, especially when lifted 6"+. Very over rated.

Some of these numb-nuts who are ****-canning have to understand they were designed back in the mid-80's, not yesterday, big trucks (KW etc) were just coming to grips with electronic diesel technology, the stuff we are seeing in current 4x4 diesels is all because of the stuff they did with big trucks back then

The GQ's were miles ahead of their competitors at the time, Toyota responded (some time later) with the 80 Series, motor was good but it handled on corners like a bag of wet wheat.

I had a 4.2 Diesel GQ (maverick) For years. They are a good bit of kit and basically Bulletproof! I traversed the whole East Coast of Australia in mine over the years, including Camerons corner (NSW) and Tasmania. She also saw her fair share of 4WD parks and weekend get aways. Cheap to run and not that expensive if you maintain them. Mine had 4" suspension Lift, 2" tyre Lift, Lockers, Transfer case reduction gears and Turbo conversion.

Would i own another one? Hell yeah, if i had the room.

Owning both a GQ Patrol and a Ranger, there is no comparison. The Ranger is better for daily driving and mild off road work, the Patrol is a lot better when the off road gets serious. The ford parts did improve the Patrol however, a set of BA XR seats made it a lot more comfortable.

No landcruiser. Have experienced 80 series cruisers, a troopy and a 79 series ute along with a GQ wagon similar to above.
Used to have a turbo diesel 4x4 of sorts (that I'm not naming to not be used for fan boy arguments) that was worlds ahead of all of the above. Will never understand the attraction to these tractor like egomobiles. Slow, drives like crap, sounds like crap especially with the popular 3" exhaust and is expensive to run and maintain unless the 5 people I know are all liars.

They will however go far and do incredible things IF fitted with at least one diff lock. I don't get how you people spend $2000 on giant 33"+ tyres and skimp on diffs when one locker will get you further than any tyre.

I understand why the bloke above has what he has living in Sydney, it's the only thing that will actually do the tracks available nearest to Sydney (Newnes, Lithgow area). That place is so chewed up and rutted out (perhaps by 3tonne+ 33" open diffed full sized 4x4's perhaps). I moved from Sydney in 2013 and it was alright still when I had my 4x4. Went back last year and we were struggling to find tracks to do in a new Ranger XLT and modded 79 series.
So fine for maybe 5% of weekly driving, if used once a week Offroad that is.

There's nothing good I can see about these. By all means poke holes in my posts, I know nay sayers who speak against these things are always shot down by the big fan boys and must always have the last word.

Weight destroys tracks. Especially with open diffs. And giant tyres. And then the 4x4 community cry when councils close tracks due to damage. Hmmmmmmm....

Yep RWD falcon wagons and subaru's will get heaps further.
That photo is over 12 years old. Funny how you drag every thread off topic.
Pretty sure OP asked about these cars, not your expert opinion on whats better and what closes tracks..lol..

With a Nissan (maverick) as you would know, being the off road expert that you are, Dont need to skimp on "diffs" as you put it. Diffs are tuff as, as are the transfer cases and gearbox's. Have you ever been to a 4WD comp?? Did you notice that Probably 90%+ of modified vehicles there are Nissan GQ-GU based?
