And a statutory write-off if a pigeon poos on it. I suggest they’re a car better borrowed or hired for a weekend. If, deep down, you really want a BMW then buy one. Start cheaper, get used to the foibles and work up.

Thanks mate but would only be a weekender as I will keep my R36 as its a great car and I need it for the dog/s!

Nah I don't really want a BMW I just expected the hifhly respected 3.0 litre to be better. It felt slow and boring to drive.

Start cheaper? 12K for the Renault isn't much in fact they ate bargain buys inho.

I've always wanted an S-class. The W126 was my dream car when I was a kid. If I had the time, money, and the space to park it, I'd snap it up in an instant. Sadly, I have none of the above.

But I'm also torn. The W140 is in my opinion Mercedes at its peak. Solid as a tank, and weighs about as much too, and included innovations like double glazed windows to an S-class for the first time, and everything in the car is power adjustable, including the interior rear view mirror - because S-class customers shouldn't do anything manually. I don't really care that it's just a 6-cylinder, because the point of an S-class is to waft about, not to go fast.

Thankfully, I don't have the means to even consider this. It's just a pipedream at the moment. Hopefully, some day, I will have to make that agonizing decision.

I love those too, I keep seeing an S600 converted into a Limo moving people around Melbourne Airport, its two tone white and silver.

I prefer SEC/SEL though, if we're going smaller then might as well as get their coupe, if you want 4 doors then LWB, I don't feel the SE models fit in anywhere between.

W140 is hands down the better vehicle in all regards, but S Class purists especially w126 ones get a bit butt hurt if someone brings that up.
For $40k I think you’d be better off going for the 560 SEL or SEC as opposed to the mid range and average performing 420.
One in WA which looks to be a good price. Probably the cheapest they’ll ever be now, and considering it’s priced a good $25-30k under the others on the market, is a lot of change to sort out any issues.

I’ve had a 140 S320 and S500, and I don’t mind the 320s. My 320 was nearly as quick as the 500 from around 80-200k, and the lower gearing of the 6 makes up for the lack of torque. Plus the M104 revs out to nearly 7000rpm and sounds pretty good.
I couldn’t justify $40k for any 140 especially a 6 cylinder. Maybe look at NZ, can get a decent one for $5k.
I just sold a W116. These cars are undervalued atm. Am thinking about bringing my 560sel to Aus as a private import after seeing what prices are being asked for them. I bought for $12k in 2017 with a spare 560SEC pommy import (300hp) parts car. I sold some Mercedes parts to a bloke and when he came around to pick up, he bought the SEC parts car and my 140 CL600 on the spot.

I also prefer the long wheelbase too, but at its age, I think it'd be wiser to buy based on the condition of the car than engine/wheelbase combination. As above. Also, that example of the 560 looks somewhat more worn, and three things bother me: rust, lowering, and aftermarket sound system. Some of the woodgrain has also started to fade. If I were in the position to buy now, I wouldn't rule it out, but I'll just have to consider the time and money it'll cost to put it back to factory original.

Nice W116, though. My first experience with Mercedes-Benz was riding in the back seat of a W116 280 S, in Silbergrun metallic. I loved that colour. I'd also consider an immaculate W116 in that colour.

Yeah I see where you're coming from, and am on the same page - I'd rather an immaculate S320 over a dog of an S600 for the same price, same story with a 4.0 Fairlane v a V8 one etc.
The way car prices have gone it seems those who still want in but can't afford the exorbitant asking prices for good examples have to resort to buying ones at a cheaper price in need of some or major repair. I think this goes for nearly everything classic/modern classic Australian, Porsche 911, BMW M cars & E30 3 series, Mercedes W108, etc. Looks as those the 126s are approaching that territory unfortunately.

For the record, the HDT were doing the ADR compliance work on the Ladas in 1988, post their split with Holden.

This situation occurred due to a contra arrangement being struck with Russia (in exchange for wheat debts being owed to Australia IIRC), simply because actual money was unable to be obtained from Communist Russia at the time. Thus they could send vehicles instead of cash, however those vehicles then needed to be updated to suit Australian Design Rules, before being able to be sold here.

The HDT won that tender, and it enabled their by-then cash-starved operation to generate a steady income. It has been said if it wasn't for this deal, the personal guarantee Brock had on the lease of the HDT premises may have personally bankrupted him, as there simply wasn't enough work (modifying Commodores post the Holden split) to otherwise keep the HDT business going.

The Deluxe version pictured was indeed a special model developed as some sort of headliner, "hero" model, or interest-generator.

Brock himself wasn't all that interested in this deal initially (he rolled his eyes at the original mention of it), but it literally saved him from a fate far worse than being associated with Lada.
