one thing that i find unbelieveable, is that with exception of HONDA, all the 70's jap cars where Rear wheel drive.
And Nissan/Datsun also had their own front wheel drive Cherry al through 70's albeit that they were thankfully never marketed in Oz so only a handful of private imports found their way here (there was at least one in Perth). They probably came here via immigrants from the UK or NZ who bought their cars with them (they were assembled in NZ for a while.) See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Cherry

I'd keep that to yourself; it might be grounds to cancel your licence :-)

Mind you I did my test in a bas model 6 pot LJ Torana with three on the tree.

Many moons ago, during the mid 90's I watched a 1600 smoke a new HSV one night and old mate in the Clubby wasn't impressed, if only he knew what was beneath the bonnet of that 1600 he might have reconsidered starting the fight

Being the 90's ... probably sporting a tough FJ20 under the bonnet.

From memory it was an imported, intercooled, turbo version of the FJ24 pushing over 200kw.
The thing was nuts, I remember the first time I heard it start it sounded like someone poked a hornets nest, it sounded so busy even at cold start up idle.

Until then I had never taken much notice of Jap turbo cars as all my mates were into HQ-Z V8's and we got excited over a Holley carb upgrade or a mild cam, lol.

That's even better ... I know the FJ20T was all the rage until the SR20DETs started to come out .. especially in 1200 and 1600s.

Back when in the day there was a guy in the area who drove a 120y with a 12a rotor in it. It wasn't turboed but it was quick enough. Original ugly orange paint with added crows feet. Shabby original interior, but cool anyway. It sounded like an angry mosquitoe and a 2 stroke whipper snipper had mated and produced the car.

When l met my future wife 28 years ago she had a sky blue 120y 4sp manual, ďid a trip from Bendigo to Mt Camel ( 60ks) l was in the back with her and a friend upfront. NEVER **** myself so much, sitting on 140 kph and the thing just wallowed all the way. Was impressed with how tough these things were l brought one when l did an apprenticeship complete with a giant manga sticker on the bonnet for $1500 mint condition, roadworthy and 90,000km. Sold it 4years later still mint condition, missus said I'd get nothing for it, put it in the trading post and sold it in two days for a grand. Awesome car, mine was very slow auto so the quarter mile woud have tp be àleast 40sec.

Can beat that ... had a JB Camira on my P's ... delivering Pizzas.
Would have prefered the 2L over the 1.6L I had.

Car of the year award in 85 (86, can't remember wasn't born) the transaxle was the reason. Mum had a wagon. Many tailgate failures aside, when the parking pin failed it was cactus

I think the preceding model, the K110 series 1200, was a prettier and in many ways a better car. This:https://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.a...atsun_1200.php Rust could be an issue. My sister had a coupe for years until some persons nicked most of the front end while she was parked near UWA (chrome strips, bumper, grill, headlights, front and side turn lights etc.)

Is the Hyundai Getz the 120Y of tomorrow; not as ugly but they often seem to be driven by the same type of drivers and in the same manner as 120Y's were in the 70's? Ditto with the Jellybean shaped old Mazda 121's and Hyundai Excels.

When the Datsuns were sold here in the mid 60,s the competition was mainly Austin Morris Hillman and worst by far Triumph Herald. The difference at the time was that the Pommy wouldn't last.If you managed 60.000 miles (100000km) you had a good one.If the Jap,and I include Toyota and Mazda, didn't last for 120,000miles (200,000km) you had a bad one.Bit sad really when you consider the Datsun engines were a direct copy of BMC engines, only built so much better.

Possibly prince skylines prince were part of nissan/datsun and were big in the 1960s maybe into the 70's but in the early 70's i thought datsun 1600's were the kings of dirt.

They would have been the early 1600s they only came in 4 door though. The Stanza was a poor effort at reproducing the 1600.About 1979 - 1980 the Stanza was released also with a 1600 but with smog control they were pretty gutless by comparison
