Default "Check ABS" light

G'day all

Last week my "Check ABS" light would come on every now and then. Last night the bastard turned on halfway home, and stayed on.

Brett (lunaefghia) drove my car the other night and remarked how firm the brake pedal is - i've been noticing it getting harder and harder to brake lately.

The fluid is top notch, the pads are fine..... what could be the problem?

Pully

I was finding the check abs light kept coming on freeway trips. Or trips at around 100 kmph. Our front wheels have electronic sensors attached to them. From memory dust gets in and sets the light off. From memory all i did is get the hose and clean the area out.

I had a mechanic mate who changed the rotors on a EF, and it seemed the sensor was damaged, and it constantly thought the brakes were locking... wrote off the car through someones front fence, and nearly killed himself.

So yeah, if it's getting harder and harder to brake, watch yourself!

Usually a damaged brake booster will caue firmer braking. Can you hear a sucking when you apply the brakes?

They're fairly common to crack too as they're plastic.

Mine done the same thing, took it to ford and they said the comp had sh!t itself, and would be worth the $$$ to fix, so they disconnected it for me, brakes atleast work now.
When my Check abs light was on, the pedal would drop while trying to brake without lock up, that was scary!!

Thanks mate, but I'm struggling to understand what you just said. Can you try again? Or is it just me?

hmmm i think kev's reply could have been structured a bit better.

i think he's saying the abs sensor on the stub axle was loose and dirty, with a clean up and tightening the mounts it worked ok.

Hey Pully,

Did you end up sussing this out as I just bought an EB XR6 and the light has come on after the battery was disconnected and it won't go away. Brakes feel fine.

RDOmain,
Mate. You prob need to put the ABS system into diag mode and get the error code from it. See here

Hey Ritchie, nah I haven't got it sorted as yet. I changed the rotors and pads, now I'm thinking the booster is damaged... $$$

Is your pedal firmer?

ps How come you bought an EB XR6? What happened to the ute?

Cheers for the link bdennis. Very helpful. I'll have a shot at that this week and see what goes.
And Pully; the pedal doesn't appear to be firmer. The light came on after the battery was disconnected a few times but now it wont go away. And don't you worry, we still have the ute Won't be getting rid of that baby!

(gf wrote off the other car we had and don't worry, she wasn't hurt and it was only a VT) so we thought we'd replace it with the original XR6
