Well done, but no more filthy than driving a pollution spewing motor car, or diesel truck, or what spews outta them jets overhead, it doesn't stay there, it all falls down, smoking is on the lesser scale of pollution, if everyone stopped smoking it would not affect climate change, only the individual with the habit!

But you did well, good on ya!

Message from a former smoker to those still smoking. Today is a good day to stop.

slowsnake, your description of the cigarette ritual reminds me of a similar description I was given (probably 40 years ago!) by a pipe smoker. He went into great depth about the ritual, the cleaning, the process, then finally (or eventually?) the actual smoking, which in the case of a pipe, seemed to be short amount of time, then re-lights throughout a long period of time, followed by dis assembly of the pipe, and so the ritual repeats. I never took up the habit, but I still remember the vivid description. His was a Peterson pipe. Things you remember...

Once I gave pipe smoking a go and I got bit slack on the cleaning and that was the last time I ever smoked a pipe; I'm sure you know what happened.

My life started with cigarette smoking as a young teen and I smoked most of the way through my 20's and 30's. I had a few attempts at quitting before being successful and didn't touch a cigarette for ten years or so. Then I moved house, met my neighbour and made a few friends, all of whom smoked. I started off with the occasional cigarette and before I knew it, I was full time hooked again. Knowing I had quit before, in November 2020 I decided to become a non-smoker by my birthday (the following April). I'm coming up to the first anniversary of that quit date this month on 13th! I rarely even think about smoking now. I had a couple of days with nicotine patches before just going without altogether. It's doable. The motivation has to come from within. You'll get there.

This month is my 28th anniversary of giving up smoking.

So far have outlived my old man by 11 years.

Have not had a single puff...except 2nd hand smoke...and that is getting rarer every day.

Congrats to both of you. Being able to beat any addiction, especially one that has a substantial substance addiction component (as opposed to a mental addiction) is a significant achievement.

Well done!

I've been off the smokes for over 4 years now.

I'm not sure how the average wage earner can afford to smoke these days?

I was smoking a carton of 200 a week.

At today's prices, that's anywhere from $250 - $350 a week, or $13,000 a year, (unless you are buying under the counter Chop-chop).

That's mortgage money.

I've probably saved close to $40- $50K in the last 4 years.

Please don't take this as a sermon, or me trying to be high almighty...but as a non-smoker, I've always wondered why people start in the first place ?

Let's assume it was once considered cool (why ?), or let's assume some had it 'forced' upon them during battle scenarios (soldiers). So maybe there were certain circumstances way back that created this acceptance.

However, in this day and age, I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would even start ? There is not a single positive reason. It's not considered cool, it's unhealthy (widely accepted that this is true), it's expensive....and it's addictive.

I am amazed to see young kids today, smoking...or even using their substitutes to kick the habit. Why...I don't get it ?

Have you ever heard of peer group pressure? I will leave it at that.

Lets not forget about advertising or teens being easily mislead. And the fact that some mothers smoked 2 packs Winnie Reds per day during gestation.

Applicable once upon a time...but I would have thought not now ?

Advertising is almost non-existent, and education on why not to is all around us. Peer pressure is a cop-out to me...sorry.

My 20 something Son took up smoking a few Years ago and I had the same discussion with him...I cannot understand why.

I believe that nicotine plus the ritual of smoking or vaping, ticks a box for people with certain exacerbated mental health conditions.

Plenty of people around me smoke, from Chinese black market cigarettes through to chop-chop and legal roll-your-own. From a financial viewpoint, I wish everyone who wanted to stop, was able to.

So, what did your son say was the reason he took up smoking? You may not understand it, from your perspective, but that doesn't invalidate the reasons he took it up.

I think your answer is much closer than you think!

A lot of us when growing up were addicted to nicotine before we even started smoking. Houses were full of smoke, the car was full of smoke (people didnt even wind the window down, dont know how we breathed), the pub was abolutely full of smoke, restuarants etc etc. I can remember being at the doctors as a kid, and the doctor had a smoke burning away in the ashtray. Probably about 1990s, it started to become polite to go outside for a smoke.

I gave up when I had a nasty chest infection - I had one and couldnt smoke for days, but of course started to force the occasional smoke into my painful, congested lungs when I started to get a bit better. So I kept reminding myself, next time I get a nasty chest infection and cant smoke, dont be an idiot. Took a few years before I got another nasty chest infection, so I had a lot of time to think about it, eventually it happened and it had to be done.

trend nowadays ...... seems to be 'vaping' . . . . essentially the same as smoking and most 'seem' to think it's better for you.

Have you seen the ridiculous way some of them vape? The trend was to draw in a massive amount of vapour and breath out this massive plume for ages. They're the ones getting lungs problems from it. If you vape like you would a normal cigarette, just puffing on it a bit, then without a doubt its much "better for you" than smoking. Yeah nicotine is carcinogenic and not particluarly good for you, but ther'e a lot of other bad stuff when you burn plant material and inhale the smoke. I always wanted to do this experiment, get 100 people to smoke 20 lawn clipping cigarettes everyday for 20 years, and see how they compare to cigarette smokers.

Question is "what chemicals do they mix in with the vapes?" in my opinion vapes and cigs are just as bad as each other.

Cheers
