Actually not quite. Provided the Cortina is already a 6, then the following. Sump is different, the Falcon sump is at the front, Cortina has a rear sump. So oil pick up and sump. The dipstick is also at the front, so needs to be blocked, and a new one drilled in the rear. The position is there for it, so not impossible, but not simple swap either, unless you dont want a dipstick, in which case cut down the one thats in it just to block the tube. You can drill it, but be careful with metal filings in the crank area. To block the old one you could use a tight fitting ball bearing with some stag paste, tap it in.
If its a 4 cyl Cortina, forget it. You can swap engine crossmembers over to a 6 cyl setup easy enough, but the gearbox crossmember mount humps are in a different spot. Having said that, anything is possible if you want to throw enough dollars at it. The bonnet of the Cortina 6 has a hump to facilitate the taller donk and carb. 4 Cyl Cortinas have a fairly flat bonnet. Personally, I think the Cortina 6 was a most under-rated car. Great punch even in stock form. Straight lines anyway, handling wasnt great, but can be improved to acceptable, not good though. |

god you make it sound so hard... if i had heard that speal when i was building my car i would never have started it...lol... if your pretty handy type of person it can be all done pretty easy and if it is a 4cyl look around for a six cyl body to rob bits of etc..

I did this same conversion about 8 months ago and I got the motor to fit under the 4cyl bonnet. I used the standard little carb on the log manifold and the standard air cleaner and it fit under the bonnet by about half an inch.
Don't let the gearbox mount scare you away from it either. You can make an adapter bracket to fit to the 6cyl gearbox. It's a little bit of work but nothing worth having is trouble free. Try ebay for the stuff you need (sump, tailshaft, oil pickup etc.) and go for it. |
